{"id":70939,"date":"2025-07-17T21:40:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-17T21:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/70939\/"},"modified":"2025-07-17T21:40:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-17T21:40:14","slug":"trump-administration-shuts-down-lgbtq-youth-suicide-hotline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/70939\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump administration shuts down LGBTQ youth suicide hotline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-1c7fe7\" class=\"body-graf\">The Trump administration on Thursday afternoon officially terminated the 988 Suicide &amp; Crisis Lifeline\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/988lifeline.org\/help-yourself\/lgbtqi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">LGBTQ Youth Specialized Services<\/a> program, which gave callers under age 25 the option to speak with LGBTQ-trained counselors. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ea08f4\" class=\"body-graf\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/about\/news-announcements\/statements\/2025\/samhsa-statement-988-press-3-option\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announcement <\/a>that the specialized service would be shuttered was made last month by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The agency said it would \u201cno longer silo LGB+ youth services\u201d \u2014 notably removing the \u201cT\u201d representing the transgender community \u2014 and would instead \u201cfocus on serving all help seekers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0a35f7\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cEveryone who contacts the 988 Lifeline will continue to receive access to skilled, caring, culturally competent crisis counselors who can help with suicidal, substance misuse, or mental health crises, or any other kind of emotional distress. Anyone who calls the Lifeline will continue to receive compassion and help,\u201d the agency stated at the time. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-122d26\" class=\"body-graf\">The 988 Suicide &amp; Crisis Lifeline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/988-suicide-prevention-hotline-launch-nationwide-rcna38297\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">launched in July 2022<\/a>, two years after President Donald Trump signed the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act, making 988 the universal number for the national suicide prevention line. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/senate-bill\/2661\/text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bipartisan legislation<\/a> noted that LGBTQ youths \u201care more than 4 times more likely to contemplate suicide than their peers and stated that SAMHSA \u201cmust be equipped to provide specialized resources\u201d to high-risk populations, including LGBTQ youths. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b6c1d2\" class=\"body-graf\">The specialized LGBTQ hotline was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/mental-health\/issue-brief\/growing-uncertainty-about-the-future-of-the-988-suicide-and-crisis-lifelines-lgbtqi-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rolled out in October 2022<\/a>, initially as a pilot program, receiving between $29.7 million and $33 million annually, according to SAMHSA. Also known as the \u201cPress 3 option,\u201d the program gave 988 callers the option to \u201cpress 3\u201d to connect with a counselor trained to assist lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer youths and young adults (they could also text 988 with the word \u201cPRIDE\u201d). Nearly 1.5 million contacts were routed to the LGBTQ service since its launch, according to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/mental-health\/988\/performance-metrics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> data available on the SAMHSA website<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0712a6\" class=\"body-graf\">The Trevor Project, an LGBTQ youth crisis intervention and suicide prevention organization, was initially the sole provider of the specialized service, but eventually seven providers were part of 988\u2019s LGBTQ Youth Subnetwork. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-eeb079\" class=\"body-graf\">Jaymes Black, CEO of the Trevor Project, called the termination of the service \u201cunfathomable.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-04238e\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThis administration has made a dangerous decision to play politics with real young people\u2019s lives,\u201d Black said in a statement. \u201cThe 988 Lifeline\u2019s Specialized Services Program was created to serve Americans at highest risk for suicide \u2014 including veterans and LGBTQ+ youth \u2014 with best-practice crisis care that meets these populations\u2019 unique needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-fc5bf0\" class=\"body-graf\">The option for 988 callers to press 1 if they are veterans or service members seeking specialized services will remain in operation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"pullquote__quote\" data-testid=\"pullquote-quote\">\u201cSadly, more children are going to die in America because of this cut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pullquote__attribution\">Rep. seth moulton, d-mass.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-844a34\" class=\"body-graf\">Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., who co-sponsored the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/4194\/cosponsors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">legislation that paved the way<\/a> for the 988 Suicide &amp; Crisis Lifeline, spoke about the termination of the LGBTQ youth service in an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5b40d5\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cKids are going to die,\u201d Moulton said when asked about the termination\u2019s effects. \u201cThis is actually the kind of thing Republicans should care about if they really care about American kids, because an extraordinary percentage of the people who call this lifeline in a moment of crisis say that it saved their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-29d525\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cAs a veteran, I know how much it means to my fellow veterans to be able to push a button when they call 988 and get connected directly to a veterans crisis counselor \u2014 someone who\u2019s trained to deal with veterans. Well, LGBTQ kids need that, too,\u201d he added. \u201cSadly, more children are going to die in America because of this cut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9d2c1a\" class=\"body-graf\">It wasn\u2019t just Democrats who criticized the decision to shutter 988\u2019s LGBTQ youth service. At a press conference outside the Capitol on Thursday, Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., joined several of his colleagues from across the aisle to speak out against the program\u2019s termination. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-dd2bcd\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThis lifeline has provided help \u2014 it has connected young people with trained professionals who understand what they are going through, and in many cases, it has saved lives,\u201d Lawler said. \u201cCutting a program that is working, that is meeting a real and growing need, just does not make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-942a43\" class=\"body-graf\">When asked for comment about the termination of the LGBTQ service and critics\u2019 claims, a SAMHSA spokesperson pointed NBC News to the agency\u2019s June statement announcing the service\u2019s forthcoming termination. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-927bd2\" class=\"body-graf\">A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services, of which SAMHSA is a part, said the Press 3 option had run out of congressionally directed funding and added that continued operation of the specialized service would have required reallocating funds away from the main 988 Lifeline, possibly resulting in massive reductions in service. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-da7f91\" class=\"body-graf\">While 988 has discontinued its LGBTQ youth service, LGBTQ youths and young adults seeking specialized crisis intervention and suicide prevention help can still contact the Trevor Project for such services by calling 1-866-488-7386, texting START to 678678 or visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__http:\/\/thetrevorproject.org\/Get-Help__;!!PIZeeW5wscynRQ!rpHD3EgILjwzDkXCXu7LSy0YNVI1lDb6-MkgOEepq5X2APTzTg7xyND_nOS09xLgWOpdtobXhz3evQJHzRWOhdhTFN6MjyRyr9DdDhw$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TheTrevorProject.org\/Get-Help<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-255af5\" class=\"body-graf\">Some states are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyomingpublicmedia.org\/health\/2025-07-07\/states-to-provide-a-safe-place-for-lgbtq-youth-to-call-during-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">planning to help fill the gap<\/a> left by the termination of 988\u2019s specialized service for LGBTQ youth. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-357c5c\" class=\"body-graf\">California Gov.
