This year, the event is scheduled for Saturday, April 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with over 60 vendors focused on environmental sustainability, a kids zone, food trucks, clothes swap, and more.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to do your part for the environment, be sure to spend some time in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityoflamesa.gov\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.cityoflamesa.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">La Mesa <\/a>on Saturday, April 18.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the day that the city will be celebrating its annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityoflamesa.gov\/1811\/Earth-Day\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.cityoflamesa.gov\/1811\/Earth-Day\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">La Mesa Earth Day Fair<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityoflamesa.gov\/395\/MacArthur-Park\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.cityoflamesa.gov\/395\/MacArthur-Park\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MacArthur Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>La Mesa Courier\u00a0caught up recently with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityoflamesa.gov\/751\/Parks-and-Recreation\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.cityoflamesa.gov\/751\/Parks-and-Recreation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Director of Parks and Recreation<\/a>, Misty Thompson, for a Q&amp;A.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LMC:<\/strong>\u00a0Talk a little bit about the purpose of this event for La Mesa, how it got started, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thompson:\u00a0<\/strong>What is now known as the La Mesa Earth Day Fair has roots dating back to 2007. Originally launched as \u201cSustain La Mesa,\u201d the event spent early years at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityoflamesa.gov\/391\/Harry-Griffen-Regional-Park\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Griffen Park<\/a>, serving as a friendly introduction to green living. <\/p>\n<p>After a brief hiatus following the 2013 event, the La Mesa Park and Recreation Foundation partnered with the city in 2018 to bring the tradition back. The celebration moved to April to honor Earth Month and is now held at MacArthur Park. While the name changed, the goal remains the same \u2014 a commitment to\u00a0Sustain La Mesa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LMC:<\/strong>\u00a0How has the attendance been over the years for the event and what kind of turnout do you expect this time around?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thompson:<\/strong>\u00a0Over the years, the attendance has increased, and the La Mesa Earth Day Fair now draws well over 1,000 people. Vendors will offer eco-friendly products, resources, and services focused on waste diversion, energy efficiency, water conservation, clean transportation, emerging technologies, and healthy living. It is not just a day for educational resources; it is a day for hands-on fun! The event features a variety of activities, ranging from educational arts and crafts and creative art projects to seed planting and fitness sessions.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For children: Little ones can burn off energy in the jumpers and obstacle course, get creative with recycled art, or visit the tie-dye and rock painting stations. Plus, a few lucky children will ride away with a brand-new bike and helmet!<\/li>\n<li>Bike rodeo: Bring a bike and helmet (or borrow one from the Bicycle Coalition) to learn about active transportation.<\/li>\n<li>Hands-on activities: Get your hands dirty with composting, participate in a tree planting, or take a guided tour of the garden.<\/li>\n<li>Community sharing: Hosted by I Love a Clean San Diego, the clothing swap offers a way to refresh a wardrobe sustainably and will be located next to the Community Garden.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>LMC:<\/strong>\u00a0For someone who has never been to this event before, what would you tell them to expect?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thompson:<\/strong>\u00a0Expect a day filled with interactive demonstrations, great food trucks, and a chance to take home plants, succulents, new-to-you clothes, and recycled art.
