{"id":71221,"date":"2025-07-18T00:06:08","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T00:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/71221\/"},"modified":"2025-07-18T00:06:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T00:06:08","slug":"cbs-to-cancel-late-show-with-stephen-colbert-citing-finances","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/71221\/","title":{"rendered":"CBS to Cancel &#8216;Late Show With Stephen Colbert&#8217; Citing Finances"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTV\u2019s ongoing problems with <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/late-night\/\" id=\"auto-tag_late-night\" data-tag=\"late-night\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">late night<\/a> have come for <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/stephen-colbert\/\" id=\"auto-tag_stephen-colbert\" data-tag=\"stephen-colbert\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Colbert<\/a>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/cbs\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cbs\" data-tag=\"cbs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CBS<\/a> announcing Thursday that it plans to end his \u201cLate Show\u201d after the next TV season, citing a \u201cfinancial decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe decision \u2014 which ends years of original late-night programming at CBS that started when the network lured David Letterman from NBC in 1993 \u2014 comes as the economics of wee-hours TV have begun to accelerate, with media companies growing wary of the high price tags involved in producing the shows while the young viewers they try to attract watch more of them via digital video.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire \u2018The Late Show\u2019 franchise\u201d in May of 2026,\u201d CBS executives said in a statement. \u201cWe are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television. \u00a0This\u00a0is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. \u00a0It is not related in any way to the show\u2019s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tColbert, who was informed of the network\u2019s decision Wednesday evening, according to a person familiar with the matter, told the audience at the taping for Thursday\u2019s broadcast about the matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThere has been growing speculation that both Colbert and Jon Stewart, who hosts one broadcast of Comedy Central\u2019s \u201cDaily Show\u201d each week could be under growing scrutiny from executives at Skydance Media, which is slated to acquire Paramount Global, the parent of both CBS and Comedy Central. David Ellison, who leads Skydance, has projected an image of being intrigued by the politics espoused by President Donald Trump, who Colbert and Stewart routinely skewer in monologues and commentary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCBS has already been winding down its activity around midnight. The network recently cancelled \u201cAfter Midnight,\u201d a companion program that aired after \u201cLate Show\u201d and featured comedian Taylor Tomlinson.
