{"id":71233,"date":"2025-07-18T00:12:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T00:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/71233\/"},"modified":"2025-07-18T00:12:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T00:12:12","slug":"cbs-is-ending-the-late-show-with-stephen-colbert-next-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/71233\/","title":{"rendered":"CBS is ending \u2018The Late Show with Stephen Colbert\u2019 next year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      CNN<br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd80jsvv000v27pabtjxdaz8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a shocking move, CBS is ending \u201cThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert\u201d next year, potentially exiting the late-night television business altogether.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd80o9sr000b356nqfl22flu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The cancellation will take effect in May 2026, the normal end of the broadcast TV season, the network said Thursday evening.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd81lqet00003b6nv0sfnulo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The move is particularly surprising because \u201cThe Late Show\u201d is typically the highest-rated show in late-night. And the timing is bound to raise questions because it comes just two weeks after the parent company of CBS, Paramount, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/03\/media\/trump-cbs-news-staffers-paramount-settlement-60-minutes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">settled<\/a> a lawsuit lodged by President Trump against CBS News.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd80pvlk000r356n7g9gfrzu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The settlement \u2013 and Paramount\u2019s pending merger with Skydance Media \u2013 spurred speculation about Colbert\u2019s future at CBS. Colbert, after all, is one of the staunchest critics of Trump on television.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd81h26r0014356nmw8nzpcb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Colbert alluded to the online worrying about his fate when he returned from vacation on Monday night. He condemned the Paramount settlement on air, likening it to a \u201cbig fat bribe,\u201d and he joked that his new mustache would protect him from the corporation: \u201cOkay, okay, but how are they going to put pressure on Stephen Colbert\u2026 if they can\u2019t find him?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd80o9sr000f356nuu3ln7f7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CBS, however, said in a statement that \u201cthis is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.  It is not related in any way to the show\u2019s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd81x783001d3b6n6noh8ka6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The corporate financial pressures are real; Paramount laid off another 3.5 percent of its workforce just last month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd81xcmg001g3b6njdb4ejd6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, the Colbert news was head-spinning in the TV world, as evidenced by the heartbroken reactions from fans on the show\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DMOhWKsxT_G\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Instagram page<\/a>. One of the most-favorited comments said \u201cthis is crazy.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd80jv100000356n19cg2vo5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Colbert shared the news at his show taping on Thursday evening. He gave no indication that it was his decision; to the contrary, he said he found out about the network\u2019s decision \u201clast night.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd80qhdw000t356nnn0r91rw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNext year will be our last season,\u201d Colbert said as audible \u2018boos\u2019 were heard in the studio audience. \u201cThe network will be ending our show in May,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s the end of \u2018The Late Show\u2019 on CBS,\u201d he added, going on to say, \u201cThis is all just going away.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd81tlcr000j3b6n6iux96db@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some observers immediately raised concerns about Paramount\u2019s motivation, including Democratic Senator Adam Schiff, who happened to be Colbert\u2019s guest on Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd81uv7e000s3b6nn33pv5c3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cJust finished taping with Stephen Colbert who announced his show was cancelled,\u201d Schiff wrote on X. \u201cIf Paramount and CBS ended the Late Show for political reasons, the public deserves to know. And deserves better.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd811ur700083b6ngeus5bzv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI do want to say that the folks at CBS have been great partners,\u201d Colbert said. \u201cI\u2019m so grateful to the Tiffany network for giving me this chair and this beautiful theater to call home. And of course, I\u2019m grateful to you, the audience, who have joined us every night in here, out there, all around the world.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd81vyu100153b6ns3cwgws7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe Late Show\u201d franchise has been a foundation of the CBS lineup for more than thirty years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd812ji7000d3b6ngq59ti6l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Colbert, who took the reins from founding host David Letterman in 2015, said in his on-air announcement that \u201cI wish somebody else was getting it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd81u6b0000q3b6nql22ypda@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CNN has reached out to representatives for Letterman and Jon Stewart, who hosts a weekly edition of \u201cThe Daily Show\u201d for another Paramount-owned property, Comedy Central.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd81wrir00193b6nb16ycq23@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The network <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/cbs-couldnt-afford-the-late-late-show-with-james-corden-2023-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ended<\/a> James Corden\u2019s \u201cLate Late Show\u201d in 2023. At the time, executives said that 12:35 a.m. show had become unprofitable for CBS.
