Rory McIlroy now faces a stream of potentially embarrassing news about his personal life from a new book. McIlroy begins his attempt to become only the fourth golfer to win<\/a> back-to-back Masters on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The details, which surfaced just days before the Masters, raise new questions about how much of a distraction the situation could become for McIlroy this week. According to a new report by the Daily Mail<\/a> newspaper, the book allegedly reveals \u201csavage details about cheating rumors\u2026 mortifying text messages\u2026 and a secret steamy weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new biography of McIlroy<\/a>, titled Rory: The Heartache and Triumph of Golf\u2019s Most Human Superstar was released on March 31 and is authored by Alan Shipnuck. The author\u2019s previous book, a biography of three-time Masters winner<\/a> Phil Mickelson, contained revelations about Mickelson\u2019s gambling habit and debts as well as other embarrassing personal details.<\/p>\n

Partly because of the revelations in the Mickelson book, McIlroy refused to cooperate with Shipnuck for the new Rory book, the author told The Irish Times. Shipnuck went ahead with the book anyway, revealing details about his 2024 divorce filing against his wife of seven years at the time, Erica Stoll.<\/p>\n

Why McIlroy Changed Mind About Divorce<\/p>\n

But McIlroy and Stoll called off the divorce proceedings just one month later. According to the Mail report, McIlroy said at the time that \u201cErica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together.\u201d McIlroy later described the divorce drama as a \u201cwake up call,\u201d as quoted by the Mail.<\/p>\n

\u201cShipnuck draws parallels between McIlroy and Woods, whose multiple affairs were exposed in 2009 after he crashed his car into a fire hydrant outside his home during Thanksgiving weekend,\u201d Mail reporters Daniel Bantz and Jack Bezants wrote in the Monday report.<\/p>\n

But they also make clear that, according to Shipnuck\u2019s book, \u201caccusations of that extent have never been leveled at McIlroy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The book, however, goes into detail about McIlroy\u2019s seemingly platonic relationship with CBS Sports reporter Amanda Balionis.<\/p>\n

\u201cShipnuck\u2019s book says that people close to McIlroy and Balionis insist they were never romantically involved but that when he started researching for his book, 90 percent of questions he was asked were about the pair,\u201d the Mail reported.<\/p>\n

An earlier Daily Mail report<\/a> from 2024 said that McIlroy and Balionis had become the \u201ctalk of the links\u201d due to what appeared to be their unusually close friendship.<\/p>\n

Book Explains Root of McIlroy Rumors<\/p>\n

Though it referred to \u201cmortifying text messages,\u201d the Mail report failed to deliver on reporting what the contents of the alleged messages may have been, other than \u201cgroup chats between staffers\u201d that were \u201cfull of \u2018winking emojis\u2019 and brazen comments about the \u2018smitten\u2019 golfing superstar.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those messages were from 2013 when McIlroy became engaged to tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, an engagement that lasted just five months. According to the book, as cited in a New York Post report<\/a>, the breakup was caused by McIlroy\u2019s \u201creckless\u201d behavior in openly pursuing a relationship with Stoll while still engaged to Wozniacki.<\/p>\n

But there is no evidence, according to the Mail report on Shipnuck\u2019s book, that McIlroy was actually unfaithful to Wozniacki while pursuing Stoll.<\/p>\n
