{"id":71363,"date":"2025-07-18T01:20:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T01:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/71363\/"},"modified":"2025-07-18T01:20:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T01:20:09","slug":"former-all-star-kyle-gibson-retires-after-13-mlb-seasons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/71363\/","title":{"rendered":"Former All-Star Kyle Gibson retires after 13 MLB seasons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MLB just lost a reliable starting pitcher to retirement.<\/p>\n<p>After 13 seasons in the big leagues, 37-year-old Kyle Gibson announced his retirement on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5DU-VjG8xVg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thursday\u2019s episode of the \u201cServing it Up\u201d<\/a> podcast, adding that he made the decision \u201ca couple weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been exciting being home and exciting kind of turning the page to a new chapter,\u201d Gibson said. \u201cI\u2019ve kind of taken the last couple weeks to call people and text people that I really wanted to let know in person and I\u2019m going to take the next few days and try to write something up and make sure that I can properly thank everybody that needs to be thanked for the last 15-16 years in professional baseball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kyle Gibson more than half of his baseball career with the Twins. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Gibson was drafted by the Twins in the first round of the 2009 draft out of the University of Missouri.<\/p>\n<p>The righty then underwent Tommy John surgery in 2011 while he was pitching in Triple-A, delaying his MLB debut to 2013.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The right-hander went on to spend seven seasons with Minnesota, totaling 9.8 WAR in that span with a pitching record of 67-68 and a 4.52 ERA.<\/p>\n<p>Despite never being the Twins\u2019 ace, he had a reputation as a solid, durable arm to eat innings and keep the team in the game.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle Gibson made his only career All-Star appearance during his half-season with the Rangers. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>After leaving Minnesota in 2019, Gibson went on to have stints with the Rangers, Phillies, Orioles and Cardinals.<\/p>\n<p>He received an All-Star nod in 2021 for his strong first half with the Rangers when he went 6-3 with a 2.87 ERA before a trade to Philadelphia at the deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Baltimore was Gibson\u2019s final stop in the big leagues, returning this season after spending 2023 with the Orioles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Orioles released Gibson on May 20, 2025. AP<\/p>\n<p>In 12 \u2153 innings, he ran up a 16.78 ERA and was released.<\/p>\n<p>Gibson signed a minor league deal <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/14\/sports\/rays-could-move-to-tampa-after-1-7-billion-sale-finalizes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with the Rays shortly after<\/a>, but couldn\u2019t find room in the bigs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took my opt out at the end of it because they didn\u2019t have a spot [in the majors],\u201d Gibson said. \u201cThey thought they might and then they didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Gibson then began enjoying his time away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWent on the family lake vacation and met everybody at the lake,\u201d he said of his opt-out. \u201cKind of sat and waited, didn\u2019t really hear from too many people \u2014 I really wanted to have a big league opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From there, he took his time off to discuss with his wife, Elizabeth, and elected to retire.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"MLB just lost a reliable starting pitcher to retirement.
