Apple (AAPL<\/a>)<\/strong> just made a shocking move.<\/p>\n

It approved a third-party driver for Apple Silicon Macs<\/strong>, Tom’s Hardware<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n

Although some may view the change as minor, it could potentially create a significant opportunity for Nvidia<\/a> (NVDA<\/a>) <\/strong>in the AI<\/a> space.<\/p>\n

Apple<\/strong>\u2019s (AAPL)<\/strong> closed ecosystem is a longstanding part of its appeal.<\/p>\n

It gives the company control over performance<\/strong>, security<\/strong> and the overall user experience<\/strong> in a way that only a few peers can match. But in fast-moving markets, control can become a handicap.<\/p>\n

It’s especially true in artificial intelligence<\/strong>, where platform purity is not the major issue. Instead, the focus is on access to the most powerful tools.<\/p>\n

That is what makes Apple\u2019s<\/strong> so groundbreaking.<\/p>\n

What’s all the hullabaloo about? Well, Apple<\/strong> approved a third-party driver developed by AI startup Tiny Corp<\/strong>. that allows Nvidia<\/strong>GPUs<\/strong> to work with Apple Silicon Macs<\/strong> in external setups<\/strong>. On the surface, it’s not a major change for either Apple or Nvidia. It is not plug-and-play<\/strong>, it is not built for the broader user base, and it doesn’t suddenly transform Macs<\/strong> into gaming machines backed by Nvidia hardware<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For years, Apple Silicon <\/strong>made it impossible to use external GPUs on Macs <\/strong>that were based on Intel<\/strong>, at least in a limited way. Apple seems to be reopening that door by signing this driver, but only a little bit and very carefully. Even so, the opening is worth keeping an eye on.<\/p>\n

Because in the AI race<\/strong>, Nvidia<\/strong> is not just another chipmaker among millions. It is the one company Apple<\/strong> may no longer be able to keep at arm\u2019s length.<\/p>\n

The key here is not that Apple<\/strong> suddenly got outside graphics hardware for everyone.<\/p>\n

It did not, in fact, do that.<\/p>\n

Users still need to compile the driver themselves, often with tools such as Docker<\/strong>, and the current setup is aimed at AI workloads<\/strong> rather than everyday graphics or consumer display use. The solution is essentially for advanced users <\/strong>and does not represent a polished feature Apple<\/strong> wants the broader Mac<\/strong> audience to accept.<\/p>\n

Still, Apple\u2019s approval<\/strong> changes the dynamic.<\/p>\n

Before this, developers experimenting with Nvidia GPUs<\/strong> on Apple Silicon<\/strong> often needed to hang their hat on unofficial workarounds that required disabling important system protections<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That made the setups harder to control and trust. Apple\u2019s<\/strong> reported signing of the Tiny Corp driver<\/strong> eliminates one of the biggest barriers for the company.<\/p>\n

It also sends a huge signal to the markets as well as the common investor: Apple is now willing to play ball. The tech giant is willing to allow more flexibility<\/strong> on its Arm-based Macs<\/strong> than has been the case thus far.<\/p>\n

That matters because Apple Silicon<\/strong> is a runaway success. The chips are fast and efficient, and you can perform almost all everyday and professional tasks with their help. But when it comes to the most demanding AI workloads<\/strong>, Apple\u2019s hardware<\/strong> is not the first thing you will think of. Instead, that prize goes to Nvidia\u2019s GPUs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The gap has created a quiet tension regarding Apple\u2019s platform strategy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On one hand, Apple<\/strong> wants developers hooked onto its devices. On the other hand, many of the developers shaping the AI economy<\/strong> still want Nvidia hardware<\/strong> as part of their arsenal, simply because the chips’ reputation precedes them.<\/p>\n

If Apple<\/strong> makes that easier, even in limited form, it will make the Mac much more accessible to a growing market.<\/p>\n

In that light, don’t dismiss this as just another driver story.<\/p>\n

It is a sign that Apple<\/strong> may be adjusting to a reality that’s becoming more difficult to ignore. AI development won’t wait for every company to keep its ecosystem completely closed.<\/p>\n

For Wall Street<\/a><\/strong>, the more interesting question is whether this will become a mainstream Mac<\/strong> feature going forward.<\/p>\n

It is why Apple<\/strong> enabled it all.<\/p>\n

Apple<\/strong> is very selective about what it allows onto the macOS<\/strong>, especially when it involves low-level hardware support<\/strong>. So when the company signs a third-party driver that works with Nvidia GPUs, it suggests a deliberate strategy.<\/p>\n

Nvidia\u2019s<\/strong> grip on AI infrastructure<\/strong> is now too significant to disregard.<\/p>\n

Apple<\/strong>, in contrast, remains a dominant hardware company, boasting strong in-house silicon<\/strong>, but it has not become the center of gravity for serious AI compute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That is not a failure on the part of Apple<\/strong>. It means for this phase and this segment of the AI battle, the champion is Nvidia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Apple\u2019s<\/strong> reported move looks, at minimum, like an acknowledgment of that fact.<\/p>\n
