Every day in space, the Artemis II<\/a> crew is awoken to a song played by mission control in Houston.<\/p>\n

On the first day of the mission, it was \u201cSleepyhead<\/a>,\u201d a cover of a Passion Pit song by the solo artist Young & Sick. The following day, the four astronauts were stirred by John Legend\u2019s \u201cGreen Light<\/a>,\u201d featuring the rapper Andr\u00e9 3000. On Wednesday, it was \u201cUnder Pressure<\/a>,\u201d by Queen and David Bowie.<\/p>\n

On day four, mission control played Chappell Roan\u2019s \u201cPink Pony Club<\/a>\u201d for the crew, only for the track to be cut off.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were all eagerly awaiting the chorus,\u201d Artemis II commander Reid Wiseman joked.<\/p>\n

The tradition of playing songs as wake-up calls for astronauts in space dates back to 1965, during the Apollo era.<\/p>\n

Brian Odom, NASA\u2019s chief historian, told NPR<\/a> that the space agency uses the musical wake-up calls as \u201ca way to get everybody on track or to just remind people of home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a moment when they feel further away than they\u2019ve ever felt, they can be connected to family, they can be connected to culture,\u201d Odom said. \u201cThey can be connected back home in ways that only really music has a way to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, NASA released an official Spotify playlist of \u201cArtemis II Wake-Up Songs<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the space agency, these songs were preselected by the crew and their families for the historic 10-day mission.<\/p>\n

Several of the artists have responded after learning their songs were used as galactic wake-up calls.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a sci-fi head, as someone who is constantly looking towards the stars, this is massive,\u201d Young & Sick said in a TikTok video<\/a>. \u201cTo be a tiny speck on this wild mission they\u2019re on is beyond crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Glass Animals, a British indie rock band whose song \u201cTokyo Drifting<\/a>\u201d with Denzel Curry was played to wake up the crew on day seven, responded to NASA on Instagram<\/a>:<\/p>\n

The Freddy Jones Band, whose \u201cIn a Daydream<\/a>\u201d was used as a wake-up song on day three, had a one-word response<\/a>: \u201cYessss!\u201d<\/p>\n

TobyMac said it was \u201can honor\u201d for him that \u201cGood Morning<\/a>,\u201d his collaboration with gospel artist Mandisa, was picked by the crew. Mandisa died in 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know she\u2019s smiling up there right now!\u201d he wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n
