President Trump on Wednesday said he is considering the formation of a \u201cjoint venture\u201d with Iran to set up tolls in the Strait of Hormuz after the Trump administration and Tehran agreed to a two-week ceasefire deal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

ABC News\u2019s Jonathan Karl asked Trump if he approved of Iran\u2019s plan to charge vessels<\/a> a fee for passing through the strait \u2014 a key channel through which roughly 20 percent of the world\u2019s oil is transported.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re thinking of doing it as a joint venture,\u201d the president told Karl, who shared Trump\u2019s response<\/a> on the social platform X. \u201cIt\u2019s a way of securing it \u2014 also securing it from lots of other people. It\u2019s a beautiful thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Any \u201cjoint venture\u201d was not part of Iran\u2019s 10-point peace plan that the U.S. agreed to and the president previously called \u201cworkable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier Wednesday, Trump wrote on Truth Social<\/a> that there was \u201cbig money<\/a>\u201d to be made by the U.S. aiding in the \u201ctraffic buildup\u201d in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll be loading up with supplies of all kinds, and just \u2018hangin\u2019 around\u2019 in order to make sure that everything goes well,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI feel confident that it will.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president also suggested<\/a> Monday that the U.S.\u00a0could impose its own tolls\u00a0on vessels trying to transit through the channel. Leaders in Tehran signaled last week it would install a \u201ctoll booth\u201d system to exert a price on ships seeking safe passage through the strait.<\/p>\n

The Islamic Republic\u2019s previous proposal to toll vessels drew criticism from Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He blasted the potential \u201ctolling system<\/a>\u201d as \u201cillegal\u201d and \u201cdangerous for the world,\u201d adding that the U.S. and European partners would have to have a plan to address that possibility. Rubio noted, however, that the U.S. would not lead that plan.<\/p>\n

Funds raised by Iran\u2019s toll system will go toward reconstructing the country, a regional officer told The Associated Press<\/a>. Some of the accumulated fees would also be presented to Oman, though how the nation would use them is unclear.<\/p>\n

Trump and members of his Cabinet<\/a> praised the deal as a victory<\/a> for the U.S. Vice President Vance called the ceasefire a \u201cfragile truce<\/a>\u201d and warned that if Iran were to \u201clie, if they\u2019re going to cheat, if they\u2019re going to try to prevent even the fragile truce that we\u2019ve set up from taking place, then they\u2019re not going to be happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The U.S. and Iran reached the deal with a few hours to spare before Trump\u2019s 8 p.m. EDT deadline<\/a> on Tuesday. He had threatened<\/a> that if Iran did not shape up a deal and reopen the strait, Iran\u2019s \u201cwhole civilization will die tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Members of Congress were outraged<\/a> by Trump\u2019s threat. They slammed the president and fumed over a potential impending war crime<\/a>. Many called for his removal from office through the 25th Amendment<\/a>, and Connecticut Rep. John Larson (D) filed articles of impeachment<\/a> against him over the threat.<\/p>\n
