Dirk Nowitzki<\/a> had one of the most devastating first NBA Finals experiences of all time. He and the Dallas Mavericks<\/a> defeated the top two teams in the Western Conference on their route to the Finals (San Antonio Spurs and Phoenix Suns), only to suffer a loss to the Miami Heat.<\/p>\n

The Mavs secured a commanding 2-0 lead in the series, but the Heat bounced back and won the next four consecutive games. Five years later, Nowitzki and the Mavs got their revenge and upset the Heat as well when Dirk was able to take down the LeBron James-Dwyane Wade-Chris Bosh Big Three, almost singlehandedly, in six games.<\/p>\n

For Dirk, the ’06 defeat isn’t something he regrets. In a weird way, he is even grateful that it happened.<\/p>\n

“For me, that was obviously huge after ’06 how they came back and won that series,” Nowitzki once reflected<\/a>. “That was tough for me, tough for us. But I always say, what happened in ’06, the loss there, it made me better. It made me a better player in 2011. I learned. It motivated me. It pushed me to get better.”<\/p>\n

“Any way you look at it, it was part of my journey,” he continued. “… In a weird way, I am appreciative that they beat us in ’06.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

No hate for D-Wade<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the Mavs vs. Heat<\/a> rematch in 2011, Nowitzki and Dwyane Wade rekindled their rivalry. In the middle of the series, Dirk got sick, and D-Wade and LeBron mocked him over it, imitating his cough in front of the cameras.<\/p>\n

Admittedly, Nowitzki hated Wade for doing that and there was animosity between them. However, as time passed by, “German Jesus” learned to forgive and moved on.<\/p>\n

The two legendary players officially put everything behind them ahead of their Hall of Fame induction.<\/p>\n

“Dwyane Wade, he pushed me to become a better player,” Dirk confided.<\/p>\n

“We have gotten older. But when you’re young, you hold grudges,” the 2007 MVP added. “When you are older, you learn to appreciate each other’s game, respect each other’s game. We respect what each other has done for the game and the league.”<\/p>\n

The 2011 Mavs’ key to success<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nowitzki’s eagerness to return to the NBA Finals and win the chip was very evident right after the Mavs lost to the Heat in ’06. The following season, Dirk won the season MVP award and led the Mavs to a franchise record 67 wins.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the Mavs experienced another loss that season, but this time, to the “We Believe” Golden State Warriors. From then on, the Mavs spent the next four seasons adding the right pieces to build a championship team.<\/p>\n

Nowtizki still led the charge in the Mavs’ historic win over the star-studded Heat in 2011 but for him, it was because that Mavs team put their egos aside and just focused on winning<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“It felt like we got better from series to series,” Nowitzki said<\/a> in a press conference in 2023.<\/p>\n

“I think we had a bunch of older guys that had no egos that all achieved personal goals, MVPs, all-star games, all sorts of things. But none of them had won the championship,” he emphasized.<\/p>\n
