LEONARDTOWN, Md. <\/strong>\u2014 A black bear sighting in St. Mary\u2019s County has prompted local officials to urge residents to take precautions, particularly in the Piney Point and Mechanicsville areas where the animal was recently spotted in July 2025.<\/p>\n

Leon Smith, a local resident, captured a photo of the bear after it knocked over a bird feeder \u2014 a reminder of how attractants like seed and grain can draw wildlife into residential areas. The St. Mary\u2019s County Department of Emergency Services issued an advisory following the sighting, while the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Response Division continues to monitor the situation.<\/p>\n

Although black bears are typically not aggressive, they can become unpredictable if startled or lured by easy access to food. Officials stress that residents should stay alert and take steps to minimize potential encounters.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time the county has encountered bear activity. In July 2016, a black bear was struck and killed by a car<\/a> near the intersection of North Sandgates and Loveville Road, underscoring the need for continued public awareness as bear habitats intersect with populated areas.<\/p>\n
