Daniil Medvedev had one of the worst days of his career at the Monte Carlo Masters<\/a>, and it left Boris Becker asking some serious questions. Medvedev was stunned by Matteo Berrettini in a brutal straight-sets loss where he failed to win a single game, marking the first double-bagel defeat of his professional career.<\/p>\n

For a player of Medvedev\u2019s level, the result was shocking enough on its own, but Becker seemed even more concerned by the way Medvedev looked mentally and physically throughout the match.<\/p>\n

How Did Daniil Medvedev End Up With a Double Bagel?<\/p>\n

Daniil Medvedev looked completely out of sorts from the moment he stepped on court in Monte Carlo, and things only got worse from there. Against Matteo Berrettini, Medvedev never really settled into the match and ended up suffering the first 6-0, 6-0 defeat of his entire professional career.<\/p>\n

Nothing about Medvedev\u2019s game seemed to be working. He struggled badly behind his serve, sprayed forehands and backhands all over the place, and kept giving Berrettini easy opportunities to take control of rallies. The deeper the match went, the more obvious it became that Medvedev had completely lost confidence. At one point, he went through a huge stretch of the match barely winning any points at all.<\/p>\n

The frustration quickly boiled over in the second set. After falling further behind, Medvedev launched his racquet toward the back of the court, then picked it up and smashed it repeatedly into the ground until it finally snapped. It was one of the clearest signs yet of just how mentally checked out he looked.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Berrettini was playing close to perfect tennis<\/a>. He was serving big, hitting through the court, and barely making any mistakes. The Italian later said it felt like one of the best performances of his career, and it is hard to argue with that after the way he completely dominated one of the top players in the world from start to finish.<\/p>\n
