The Philadelphia 76ers received some terrible news on Thursday when they found out that Joel Embiid will need to undergo appendicitis surgery in Houston<\/a>. The Sixers ruled the big fella out with an illness earlier in the day, but now, he will miss an extended period of time before he can return.<\/p>\n

So, now the question is, how long will Embiid be out? A quick google search says 1-to-3 weeks for laparoscopic surgery and 3-to-4 weeks for open surgery. If one breaks it down to, let’s say, two weeks, that puts a potential return in Round 1 of the playoffs if the Sixers can get there.<\/p>\n

However, PhillyVoice’s Adam Aaronson looked up NBA players who had appendicitis surgery in the past, and the timelines vary. The timelines for players who recently had to undergo the procedure were out for about a month or more.<\/p>\n

With Embiid out, the Sixers will have a serious challenge just to get to the playoffs. Of course, Tyrese Maxey and Paul George are there to pick up the slack, but more pressure is placed upon Adem Bona and Andre Drummond to step in and produce while Embiid recovers.<\/p>\n

Just, once again, unfortunate timing for one of the game’s best players. Embiid was so close to entering the playoffs relatively healthy for the first time in his career, and then this happens.<\/p>\n
