{"id":71861,"date":"2025-07-18T05:45:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T05:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/71861\/"},"modified":"2025-07-18T05:45:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T05:45:09","slug":"army-removes-commanding-officer-after-alleged-racist-sexual-social-media-posts-by-soldiers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/71861\/","title":{"rendered":"Army removes commanding officer after alleged racist, sexual social-media posts by soldiers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/4H4FNIPWNFHYBJQAIM23GQ2IYY.jpg?auth=e9f28aab8e28c3d0abdf7e0d7cf1a98101837aa5375d55eb4cc0145f8bb0766e&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">Army commander Lieutenant-General Michael Wright said he was taking steps to address the &#8216;inappropriate behaviour&#8217; of members involved in the Facebook group.Sean Kilpatrick\/The Canadian Press<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The commanding officer of the Cameron Highlanders, an Ottawa reservist unit, has been temporarily removed from his position in the aftermath of a controversy involving soldiers who are alleged to have posted racist comments and sexual images in a private Facebook group. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Army commander Lieutenant-General Michael Wright said in a statement released to media Thursday that he was taking steps to address the \u201cinappropriate behaviour\u201d of Canadian Army members involved in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-military-police-reopen-investigation-into-allegations-of-racist-posts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-military-police-reopen-investigation-into-allegations-of-racist-posts\/\">\u201cBlue Hackle Mafia\u201d Facebook group<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">An interim commanding officer has been appointed to oversee the unit. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Soldiers are alleged to have posted racist, homophobic and antisemitic comments and images to the Facebook group. Gen. Wright has said previously that he was \u201cdisgusted\u201d by some of the content. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The statement does not name the unit\u2019s commanding officer, nor the interim commanding officer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-national-defence-civilian-military-panels-discipline-conduct\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Defence to set up civilian-military panels to discipline members accused of inappropriate conduct<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa are a prestigious reserve unit that plays a major role in ceremonial events in the country\u2019s capital. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Ottawa Citizen has reported that some of the images in question show male soldiers posing naked with military weapons. Some were taken at military installations. There are also derogatory comments posted about former prime minister Justin Trudeau and posts disparaging Jews and Muslims. The Globe and Mail has not seen the images in question. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Gen. Wright\u2019s statement notes that the army is initiating an investigation to \u201cexamine the alleged unethical conduct of any currently serving Canadian Army members that were part of the online group.\u201d This is \u201cin addition to the ongoing Unit Disciplinary Investigation initiated in March 2025 and Military Police Investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Gen.
