{"id":71867,"date":"2025-07-18T05:48:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T05:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/71867\/"},"modified":"2025-07-18T05:48:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T05:48:09","slug":"the-open-bryson-dechambeau-makes-out-of-character-decision-after-r1-disasterclass-at-royal-portrush","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/71867\/","title":{"rendered":"The Open: Bryson DeChambeau makes out of character decision after R1 disasterclass at Royal Portrush"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Bryson DeChambeau passed on speaking to the media and skipped a late-night range session after a disastrous start to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmagic.com\/tour\/open-championship\" data-entity-type=\"taxonomy_term\" data-entity-uuid=\"36041389-136a-4af0-a13f-1cd67c396ceb\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" title=\"The Open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Open<\/strong><\/a><strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DeChambeau may not have the best Open record but his performances in the major championships over the last few years led many to believe the big-hitting American would mount a challenge for the Claret Jug at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfmagic.com\/courses\/uk-and-ireland\/royal-portrush-golf-club-course-review#:~:text=Portrush%20will%20thrill%20you%20but,Portrush%20fits%20this%20very%20well.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Portrush<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet the 31-year-old, who won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmagic.com\/tour\/us-open\" data-entity-type=\"taxonomy_term\" data-entity-uuid=\"4d3dcdac-32ab-423b-8188-645f07541b5a\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" title=\"US Open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Open<\/a> in 2024, will in all likelihood be making an early exit from the final men&#8217;s major of the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DeChambeau carded a seven-over 78 on Thursday that included three bogeys, two double bogeys and an air shot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The whiff occurred on the fourth hole where DeChambeau was left in a brutal spot in the high grass with an outrageously awkward stance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even on his fourth stroke, his ball hardly went anywhere.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch here:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No wonder DeChambeau wasn&#8217;t in the mood to offer his thoughts and decided to skip media duties.<\/p>\n<p>He also wasn&#8217;t spotted on the range, which was odd considering we know DeChambeau is a range rat and loves nothing more than digging it out of the dirt no matter where he is on the leaderboard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DeChambeau has played in seven Open Championships and missed three cuts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Looks like he&#8217;s heading for a fourth&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Five-way tie for the lead<\/p>\n<p>Five players share the lead after 18 holes of The Open.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Harris English, Jacob Skov Olesen, Haotong Li and Matthew Fitzpatrick all carded four-under 67s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DeChambeau&#8217;s LIV peer Tyrrell Hatton is a stroke adrift of the lead alongside pre-tournament favourite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmagic.com\/players\/scottie-scheffler\" data-entity-type=\"taxonomy_term\" data-entity-uuid=\"d4998e34-4890-4951-97eb-6523a5a74aa2\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" title=\"Scottie Scheffler\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scottie Scheffler<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Masters champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmagic.com\/players\/rory-mcilroy\" data-entity-type=\"taxonomy_term\" data-entity-uuid=\"af3de653-62db-4df6-b6c6-18281f91c1cb\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" title=\"Rory McIlroy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rory McIlroy<\/a> is three off the summit after producing an opening round that thrilled and frustrated his home fans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McIlroy hit just two of 14 fairways but still managed to finish the day in the red numbers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read Andy Roberts&#8217; round one report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmagic.com\/tour\/open-championship\/open-2025-live-first-round-scores-leaderboard-updates-tee-times-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a><strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>McIlroy was roared on by thousands of fans who followed him round Portrush for more than five hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Look, I feel the support of an entire country out there, which is a wonderful position to be in, but at the same time, you don&#8217;t want to let them down,&#8221; McIlroy said. &#8220;So there&#8217;s that little bit of added pressure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I felt like I dealt with it really well today. Certainly dealt with it better than I did six years ago.
