{"id":71945,"date":"2025-07-18T06:33:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T06:33:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/71945\/"},"modified":"2025-07-18T06:33:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T06:33:14","slug":"house-passes-trumps-9-billion-doge-cuts-package-in-another-legislative-win-for-president-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/71945\/","title":{"rendered":"House passes Trump\u2019s $9 billion DOGE cuts package in another legislative win for president"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      CNN<br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd87z4xd000v2cqe1ea84r4w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            House Republicans gave the final stamp of approval early Friday morning to a package of $9 billion in spending cuts to foreign aid and public broadcasting, handing a win to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/president-donald-trump-47\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd881jrr00053b6n9zduaz47@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Congress passed the package \u2014 which is part of Trump\u2019s cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency efforts \u2014 under an obscure presidential budget law used to circumvent the Senate filibuster. The measure will now head to the president to be signed into law.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd881jrr00063b6n4n8vud02@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump is the first president in roughly 30 years to successfully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/03\/politics\/doge-cuts-rescissions-package-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">use the maneuver<\/a>, in a show of deference to the White House from the legislative branch \u2013 which is specifically given the power of the purse in the US Constitution.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-16t161939z-1745719034-rc2snfauryki-rtrmadp-3-usa-trump-bahrain.jpg\" alt=\"President Donald Trump in the Oval Office on Wednesday.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd881jrr00073b6ndkphh7td@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Roughly $8 billion will be taken from congressionally approved foreign aid programs as part of the White House\u2019s efforts to dismantle the US Agency for International Development. Another $1.1 billion comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which helps fund NPR and PBS.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd8apzk200143b6ntoftcgwq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The final tally was 216-213, with GOP Reps. Mike Turner and Brian Fitzpatrick the only Republicans to vote against the package.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd881jrr00083b6nk83adpuw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The spending cuts package, which codifies some of DOGE\u2019s cuts into law, was a key priority for Trump and conservatives who have long railed against ballooning federal spending.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd881jrr00093b6ntjkot2ke@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ahead of final passage, however, the package ran into problems in the narrowly divided House, as some of the same members demanded a separate and unrelated promise from GOP leadership <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/17\/politics\/house-vote-trump-doge-cuts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">calling for more transparency on the Jeffrey Epstein files.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd881jrr000a3b6nf20dvznr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The issue of more transparency over the Epstein case has percolated for days on Capitol Hill, placing an awkward wedge between Trump and some of his most steadfast supporters in the House GOP.<strong> <\/strong>Speaker Mike Johnson and his leadership team spent hours on Thursday afternoon with members of the House Rules Committee negotiating over the path forward.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-17t194120z-1213660588-rc2jofaavoi0-rtrmadp-3-usa-congress.jpg\" alt=\"House Speaker Mike Johnson on Thursday.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd881jrr000b3b6nrbs7y0ez@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ultimately, the committee voted Thursday night to advance the DOGE cuts package as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/17\/politics\/house-vote-trump-doge-cuts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a non-binding resolution <\/a>that calls for the release of additional Jeffrey Epstein files following calls from a number of Republicans for more transparency surrounding the case. There is nothing that would compel this to the floor, however.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd8aq4sq00183b6ndg1wo5ua@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After the House passed the DOGE cuts package, Trump, Johnson and congressional Republicans were quick to tout the move. On Truth Social, Trump said, \u201cTHIS IS BIG!!!\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd8d7w1w001y3b6nvpxu72yg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The speaker said he was \u201cdelighted\u201d to move the DOGE cuts package to the president\u2019s desk.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd8d20ez001s3b6n44ynfe3n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re going to downsize the scope of government. Government is too large. It does too many things, and it does almost nothing well. We believe in a limited government that\u2019s accountable and efficient and effective for the people, and we\u2019re going to continue to demonstrate that through our actions here on the floor,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd8d70r6001w3b6n0s3hy2wr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Johnson would not commit to bringing the non-binding Epstein resolution to the floor.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd8d004b001i3b6n4bpjl8mx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe will see how all of this develops. We\u2019re in line with the White House, there\u2019s no daylight between us,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd881jrr000c3b6nd1oqwxnv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The spending cuts package is $400 million less than the initial package the House passed after<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/17\/politics\/senate-vote-trump-doge-cuts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Senators rejected a plan to cut PEPFAR<\/a>, a global program to combat AIDS. But conservatives still voted for the package when it came up for its second vote in the House arguing it contained significant spending cuts in other areas of global health.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd881jrr000d3b6n89odo2kd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s disappointing that we\u2019re, you know, $37 trillion in debt. This, to me, was low hanging fruit. We saw how DOGE exposed a lot of this misuse of funds. It\u2019s disappointing that\u202fthe Senate took it out,\u201d Rep. Eric Burlison of Missouri said. \u201cIt\u2019s better than nothing. So I think that at least we\u2019re able to make some spending reductions.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd881jrr000f3b6nwfh9hbcd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Passage of the bill, however, now raises questions about how and whether Democrats and Republicans will be able to work together to keep the government funded past the September 30 deadline. Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer argued the process has cast doubt on whether Democrats can work in good faith with Republican lawmakers who could agree to a spending deal now and pull future funding later.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/ap25198835308394.jpg\" alt=\"Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer speaks with reporters at the US Capitol on Thursday.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd881jrr000g3b6nnyj61sky@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Schumer said that he does not \u201chave much faith\u201d in Senate Majority Leader John Thune\u2019s insistence that Senate Republicans will approach government funding in a bipartisan way, after White House Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought said earlier on Thursday that the appropriations process should be \u201cless bipartisan.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd881jrr000h3b6nskocdnv9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEvery time they have tried to resist Trump and Vought, they have folded \u2013 as recently as last night.
