\n\tJimmy Kimmel<\/a> gave a salute to \u201cThe Late Show With Stephen Colbert<\/a>\u201d \u2014 and blasted rival network CBS \u2014 on Thursday evening, hours after CBS announced that it is canceling Colbert\u2019s series in May 2026 and retiring the \u201cLate Show\u201d brand.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLove you Stephen,\u201d Kimmel wrote on his Instagram story, captioning a clip of Colbert\u2019s on-air announcement that his show would be ending. \u201cFuck you and all your Sheldons CBS.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tShortly after Colbert revealed that \u201cThe Late Show\u201d would be ending during his taping Thursday, CBS confirmed the plans<\/a>, justifying the cancelation as a \u201cpurely financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night\u201d and emphasizing that \u201cit is not related in any way to the show\u2019s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe late night format\u2019s decline amid the rise of digital media has become a well-known business trend in recent years. Nonetheless, the timing of Colbert\u2019s cancelation has raised eyebrows among commentators, indicative of a widespread belief that media companies are censoring themselves and capitulating to President Trump.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe decision to end \u201cThe Late Show\u201d comes roughly two weeks after Paramount reached an agreement with Trump to pay $16 million<\/a> to settle a lawsuit it had once described as \u201cmeritless,\u201d in which Trump accused \u201c60 Minutes\u201d of deceptively editing an interview with then-presidential candidate Kamala Harris. The settlement signaled a belief that ending the legal dispute with Trump could help speed federal approval on a planned deal for Skydance Media to acquire Paramount.<\/p>\n

\n\tColbert has been a longstanding critic of Trump, regularly skewering the President in his late night monologues since his tenure as \u201cLate Show\u201d host began in 2015.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cCBS canceled Colbert\u2019s show just three days after Colbert called out CBS owner Paramount for its $16 settlement with Trump \u2013 a deal that looks like bribery,\u201d Senator Elizabeth Warren wrote<\/a> in a statement on social media. \u201cAmerica deserves to know if his show was canceled for political reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cStephen Colbert is a profoundly good and deeply talented man with a great staff and an excellent show. They all deserve better,\u201d said Andy Richter, Conan O\u2019Brien\u2019s late night righthand man. The Bluesky post<\/a> came alongside a screenshot of a texting conversation in which Richter\u2019s contact simply wrote \u201cTrump\u201d and \u201cMother fucker.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe financial side of that business has definitely been under pressure, as CBS release asserts, but if CBS believes it can escape without some serious questions about capitulating to Trump, they are seriously deluded,\u201d wrote<\/a> former New York Times media reporter Bill Carter, now editor-at-large for Late Nighter.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen media companies cancel late night shows to appease fascist presidents, America fucking ends,\u201d TV exec producer Mike Schur (\u201cParks and Recreation,\u201d \u201cThe Good Place,\u201d \u201cA Man on the Inside\u201d) wrote<\/a> on Bluesky. \u201cIf you think for one second that this decision has nothing to do with Trump, don\u2019t worry, he will brag about it within the next 24 hours and disabuse you of that notion. The #1 way to explain America working properly is by saying \u2018comedians can make fun of he President on TV.\u2019 A good way to explain fascism is \u2018the President forces companies to fire those comedians as a condition of allowing them to conduct business.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
