Some Brooklyn tots have been banished from their little Garden of Eden.<\/p>\n
Dozens of toddlers at a luxury Red Hook school have been ripped away like weeds from a local community garden<\/a> after its caretakers dubbed them a \u201cliability\u201d \u2014 and the school failed to make a suggested cash donation to the green space, according to fuming parents and the school.<\/p>\n Elite Minds Montessori \u2014 where annual tuition for infants can top $32,000<\/a> \u2014 said it has been kept out of the grassy Urban Meadow area since the locks were changed in July, leaving frustrated parents furious that their children are being treated like \u201csecond-class citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n Elite Minds Montessori tots have been blocked from the Urban Meadow community garden since July. Courtesy Elite Minds<\/p>\n \u201cThe whole New York City Community Garden program was created to provide people in the community with access to green spaces and not these semi-public spaces that are cared for by volunteers,\u201d said Andrea Marpillero Colomina, whose 3-year-old daughter, Rita, is among the kids affected by the lockout.<\/p>\n Marpillero Colomina, a class parent at the school, which caters to children ages 3 months to 5 years old, said the volunteers\u2019 liability excuse is flimsy at best.<\/p>\n \u201cIt just seems like the spirit of community gardens is being lost by people who are trying to exclude children who are sometimes loud,\u201d Colomina said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt seems far-fetched to me that a bunch of toddlers would really be wreaking havoc in the garden. It\u2019s not like they\u2019re going in there and smoking weed.\u201d<\/p>\n Urban Meadow on the corner of President and Van Brunt streets is run and funded by taxpayers under the city Parks Department\u2019s GreenThumb program.<\/p>\n Volunteers at the garden said the kids are a \u201cliability\u201d and damage crop beds. Courtesy Elite Minds<\/p>\n While plots at the space cost $40, the garden is open to the public throughout the year, though with limited hours during the winter. Still, the rules say volunteers are well within their rights to approve or deny requests for off-hour access.<\/p>\n Elite Minds, as well as local PS 58, had been permitted to use the space during off-hours during the past seven years so that the children\u2019s little hands could explore the dirt, look for worms and enjoy the fresh air \u2014 a valuable asset that the Montessori school bought<\/a> for an initial $200 price in 2019 and a recurring $100 every year since, school administrators said.<\/p>\n Administrators at Elite Minds last made a $100 payment to Urban Meadows in May 2024, which seemingly bought them another year before the locks were changed without warning 14 months later, school proponents said.<\/p>\n When the school questioned what caused the change, a garden board member said the kids had been deemed a \u201cliability\u201d by GreenThumb after some mischievous tots trampled across some crops, the Elite Minds backers said.<\/p>\n A school mom said it isn\u2019t in the \u201cspirit of community gardens\u201d to lock out her daughter (left) and her peers. Andrea Marpillero Colomina<\/p>\n In another email, the member said the kids might be allowed back if the school agreed to establish parameters for where the kids could meander \u2014 while also suggesting that the school donate between $250 and $500, records viewed by The Post show.<\/p>\n Elite Minds never made the payment.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was so disappointing and hurtful to be locked out last year unexpectedly, and I remain so confused and upset that my youngest students have had no access, despite almost a year of parent and admin advocacy,\u201d said Laurie Torres, Elite Minds\u2019 executive director and founder, to The Post in a statement.<\/p>\n \u201cWe thought we were members of this community, but the way that the leadership, as well as Greenthumb, has acted and ignored us has really made it clear that our school (and other schools) are second-class citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n Elite Minds says it paid hundreds of dollars over the past several years for access to the garden. Courtesy Elite Minds<\/p>\n While the volunteers can approve or deny requests for off-hour access, they have never been allowed to connect donations with access.<\/p>\n The Parks Department said it has since reached out to the group managing Urban Meadow to correct the issue after being contacted by The Post.<\/p>\n Urban Meadow did not respond to a Post request for comment.<\/p>\n
