I ended up getting laid off, and I was, at that time, a single mom with two kids. I had to figure something out.

People would buy things off of me that they thought were really perfect and cute. From that, I said, “OK, I’m gonna try to do a business out of this.”

And that’s how Cute Case was born, and it’s been going really good.

Francis: When was this?

Hatcher: It was around 2018, 2019. The economy was changing; you had to figure something out. People were getting more OK with buying secondhand.

With how the economy is, you really want to trust the people that your things are coming from. You want to know them.

I started with my friends and even some of my family, donating some things, and before I knew it, it was working. My customers learned I was a woman-owned, Black-owned business and had children of my own, so they really wanted to support me anyway they could.

That’s pretty much how it worked. Now, luckily, I know good people like at Black Coffee and Franklin & Anthony Haberdashery. I also do live sales and I do a lot of selling online.

Francis: Any trends you see as to what kind of things people are buying now?

Hatcher: We’re here in Texas, so Western is always going to move. But now it’s like the trendy thing, because of “Yellowstone.” You also see people in California wanting Western now. You’ll see people on the East Coast wanting Western.

I have a friend up in Seattle who does a lot of live sales, and you won’t find any Western up there. It’s just not their culture. But now they’re seeing it mainstream.

You think about Beyoncé, who’s from Texas, right? And she really took that look kind of global. Now, everybody wants cowboy boots. It’s not in their local store. They’re going to go secondhand. They’re going to get it wherever they can, so they can have the look.

Francis: As you said, I’ve heard it referred to as the “Yellowstone” effect.

Hatcher: That’s true. Think about that: The whole “Yellowstone” movement. The thing is, we get comfortable because it’s here. We grew up with it. Now it’s definitely making its way nationwide.

Francis: And you obviously sell online.

Hatcher: I do primarily live shows, but since I’ve seen growth, I’m also working on a website now. I know people still want to be able to click and buy.

The part that I love so much is the personal sales. That’s why most of my things are live sales. But if you go to my Instagram page or even my Facebook page – I ship things every day. But the best experience is going to be my live shows.

Francis: So this is your business now?

Hatcher: Yes, I get to meet [people] and actually provide things at a fraction of what it costs new. Because no matter what, affordability is still a big piece of what it is.

The way the economy has changed, it touches everyone, whether you’re a millionaire or a billionaire down to the single mom or hard-working people. It’s touching your life. So I get everyone from the single mom coming in who just needs something to wear for an interview, trying to get a leg up, and I can afford to sell her a suit for $20-$25. I love that part of my business.

Bob Francis is business editor for the Fort Worth Report.
