\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLindsey Jordan debuted a third album, \u201cRicochet,\u201d and an 11-track indie rock record exploring the passage of time.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n
As the openers concluded, attendees shuffled closer to the stage and filled the balcony seating in anticipation of Lindsey Jordan, the generational musician and lyricist behind Snail Mail.<\/p>\n
Once Snail Mail began, the audience rhythmically bobbed their heads, attentive as Jordan made her way through the new album. Between songs, she quipped with the crowd, dedicating \u201cTonight Tonight\u201d to \u201cthe ladies.\u201d Energy rose for the album\u2019s standout songs, such as \u201cMy Maker,\u201d \u201cCruise\u201d and \u201cReverie.\u201d The songs cleverly mash Jordan\u2019s intimate lyrics with Snail Mail-specific sounds.<\/p>\n
The stage design was simple, but matched the album\u2019s overall vibe. A nod to American suburbs, a white picket fence separated the two stage levels. A traditional white house, whose windows reflected the multicolored theatre lights, loomed in the background.<\/p>\n
Nearing the end of the show, the rest of the band disappeared backstage, and Jordan sang a stripped-down version of \u201cRicochet,\u201d accompanied only by a cello.\u00a0<\/p>\n
After the intimate performance, Snail Mail returned in full for an encore, playing tribute to her teenage beginnings through \u201cThinning,\u201d from Snail Mail\u2019s 2016 EP \u201cHabit\u201d and \u201cPristine\u201d from her first full-length album, \u201cLush\u201d in 2018.<\/p>\n
For anyone new to Snail Mail, I\u2019d recommend starting with \u201cLush.\u201d \u201cDeep Sea\u201d is my favorite song of Jordan\u2019s. \u201cLush\u201d is one of the albums you can listen to straight through and on repeat. The album encompasses teenage angst, romance and heartbreak in a way I think most modern artists haven\u2019t come close to accomplishing.<\/p>\n
\u201cRicochet\u201d is much more similar to \u201cLush\u201d than Jordan\u2019s second album, \u201cValentine.\u201d It expands on some of what made \u201cLush\u201d so good \u2014 its shimmery guitar tones and clear-eyed, honest lyrics.<\/p>\n
When I first added songs from \u201cLush\u201d to my playlist, it was April of my sophomore year of high school. Seeing Snail Mail now, in my sophomore spring of college, felt full circle. The same notes of sentimental \u201990s rock still serve well to anecdote any sophomore spring slump you find yourself in.<\/p>\n
However, it\u2019s hard to completely compare the albums. \u201cRicochet\u201d adds a trace of weariness absent in \u201cLush\u201d\u2019s tribute to earthshattering love. The album has an older, more mature persona, one that accepts that nothing stops time, even the things that felt all-consuming in \u201cLush.\u201d While \u201cLush\u201d remains one of my favorite albums, it\u2019s exciting to see what\u2019s next for Snail Mail and witness Jordan\u2019s music evolve.<\/p>\n
