{"id":725748,"date":"2026-04-13T20:38:19","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T20:38:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/725748\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T20:38:19","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T20:38:19","slug":"california-science-centers-expansion-milestone-nbc-los-angeles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/725748\/","title":{"rendered":"California Science Center\u2019s expansion milestone \u2013 NBC Los Angeles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mission nearly complete.<\/p>\n<p>After years of planning and construction, the <a href=\"https:\/\/californiasciencecenter.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">California Science Center<\/a> said Monday that <a href=\"https:\/\/californiasciencecenter.org\/press-room\/pressrelease\/2026-04-13\/completion-of-building-construction-for-the-future-samuel-oschin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">construction is finally finished<\/a> on a building set to become the permanent home of Space Shuttle Endeavour.<\/p>\n<p>The Exposition Park museum broke ground on its $450 million project to build <a href=\"https:\/\/californiasciencecenter.org\/about-us\/samuel-oschin-air-and-space-center\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center<\/a> in June 2022 \u2014 a 200,000-square-foot expansion to nearly double the Science Center\u2019s educational exhibit space.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2025, President and CEO of the California Science Center Jeff Rudolph <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/video\/on-air\/final-countdown-for-shuttle-endeavour-exhibit-debut\/3794671\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told NBCLA<\/a> the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center was designed to house Space Shuttle Endeavour \u201cin full launch position, with solid rocket boosters and external tanks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tA new addition to the California Science Center will give visitors a one-of-a-kind view of the space shuttle. John C\u00e1diz Klemack reports for the NBC4 News at 6 a.m. on Oct. 22, 2025.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The towering vertical display inspired by the shuttle\u2019s shape will be one of a kind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It will be] the only place in the world a full space shuttle stack is displayed, and it\u2019s in this space, which provides unobstructed views of the whole thing,\u201d Rudolph said. \u201cIt\u2019s a 20-story-tall space with no columns, no walls, amazing views.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Designed by ZGF Architects, the building features a curvilinear stainless-steel exterior, with its primary structure peaking at 200 feet. It\u2019s now visible from several spots across LA.<\/p>\n<p>ZGF partner Ted Hyman called the project the California Science Center\u2019s \u201cmoonshot ambition,\u201d and said the space will be \u201can approachable experience that feels welcoming, immersive, and engaging to all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEngineers moved space shuttle Endeavor\u2019s external fuel tank through Exposition Park to the soon-to-be Air and Space Center after being on display at the California Science Center for a decade. Anastassia Olmos reports for the NBC4 News on Jan. 10, 2024.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>With the building\u2019s construction completed, the museum said it is now outfitting the facility with 100 historic aerospace artifacts integrated with 100 hands-on exhibits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis intensive phase of work will continue for several months before the California Science Center announces an opening date for the future Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center,\u201d a press release stated.<\/p>\n<p>The new building will feature three multi-level galleries \u2014 the Samuel Oschin Shuttle Gallery, the\u00a0Korean Air Aviation Gallery, and the\u00a0Kent Kresa Space Gallery \u2014 each designed to encourage guests of all ages \u201cto investigate scientific and engineering principles of atmospheric flight and the exploration of the universe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe California Science Center is preparing to move the Space Shuttle Endeavor to a vertical position.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis amazing project significantly expands our ability to accomplish our mission, to stimulate curiosity and inspire science learning in everyone, on a scale and with an impact unlike anything in our history. It is the culmination of our ambitious three-decade master plan,&#8221; Rudolph said in a press release Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center will stand as an enduring source of inspiration for generations of scientists, engineers and explorers \u2013 and we cannot wait to share it with the world,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/californiasciencecenter.org\/exhibits\/endeavour-experience\/space-shuttle-endeavour\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Space Shuttle Endeavour<\/a> successfully completed 25 space missions, including the first service mission to the Hubble Space Telescope.<\/p>\n<p>It first launched on May 7, 1992, for mission STS-49, which was completed through a series of four spacewalks. It&#8217;s final mission into space was in May 2011, when it delivered spare parts to the International Space Station.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Mission nearly complete.
