When Evil Lurks<\/a>, the gory, gloriously devastating horror movie from Argentine filmmaker Demi\u00e1n Rugna, sent genre freaks spiraling when it arrived in 2023. Us included<\/a>. \u201cStrong performances, huge shocks, and a heavy sense of inevitability make this horror movie terrifying,\u201d we wrote in our review at the time. \u201cRugna offers up some tremendous foreshadowing designed to get his audience squirming, then crosses lines that few horror filmmakers are willing to cross.\u201d Frankly, I am still thinking about those moments, years later.<\/p>\n

Rugna\u2019s film earned a brief theatrical release from IFC before worming its way to the horror-centric streaming platform Shudder. But now, Second Sight Films has announced that it\u2019s minting When Evil Lurks on a spiffy new 4K Blu-ray release, allowing fans of the film to own it forever, regardless of who owns the streaming rights. In a time of digital peril, it\u2019s a good investment in the archives \u2014 and the shelf. Look at this set.<\/p>\n

The box set, which comes in Limited Edition and Standard Edition variants, packs a bunch of new special features, including interviews with Rugna, the cast, and a video essay breaking down the film\u2019s layers of meaning. The Limited Edition comes with an entire book of essays inspired by the film, as well as the slipcase art by Chris Berning.<\/p>\n

Both of Second Sight\u2019s 4K editions arrive on July 28<\/a>.
