{"id":727466,"date":"2026-04-14T14:25:17","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T14:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/727466\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T14:25:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T14:25:17","slug":"asu-and-ua-researchers-coauthor-article-about-a-chimpanzee-civil-war-in-uganda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/727466\/","title":{"rendered":"ASU and UA researchers coauthor article about a chimpanzee civil war in Uganda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Arizona State University and University of Arizona researchers are among more than 20 coauthors of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.adz4944?utm_source=trellis&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=The%20study,%20which%20involved%20a%20University%20of%20Arizona%20primatologist,%20suggests%20that%20there%20is%20a%20profound%20link%20between%20shared%20space%20and%20group%20identity%20among%20chimpanzees.\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">new article in the journal Science<\/a> about a deadly split in a large group of chimpanzees.<\/p>\n<p>Chimps and bonobos are humans\u2019 closest living relatives.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers have spent decades studying wild chimps living in a Uganda national park. Then the group split in two over several years.<\/p>\n<p>UA professor Jacob Negrey is a coauthor of the article, which labels the ensuing violence a civil war not seen before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that became very clear to us when this split kind of escalated into lethal conflict when members of one of the new groups began to kill members of the other group,\u201d Negrey said. Around the time of the group split, some of the oldest male chimps died and the highest ranking male was overtaken.<\/p>\n<p>ASU professor Kevin Langergraber is also a coauthor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese things might have been important, but they\u2019ve all happened before and no split occurred. What was unusual was the group had grown and grown and grown for so long that they got to be the largest chimpanzee group ever known. And that\u2019s probably at the bottom of it in the end,\u201d Langergraber said.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ListE-items\" data-list-loadmore-items=\"\">\n<li class=\"ListE-items-item\">\n<p>Mexican gray wolves are one of the smallest wolf species in the world and among the most endangered. The animal\u2019s habitat once spanned the mountains of central Mexico, up to southeastern Arizona, southern New Mexico and southwest Texas.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ListE-items-item\">\n<p>The FIGHT Act is co-sponsored by 165 member of Congress, including Sen. Mark Kelly and Reps. Greg Stanton, Juan Ciscomani, and David Schweikert.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ListE-items-item\">\n<p>There are grassy fields, tree-covered mountains, desert scrub and riparian preserves.
