Donald Trump<\/a> \u201cbrings out the worst in people, and he brings out the worst in me\u201d, Tim Walz has said in a new interview in which Minnesota\u2019s governor struck an apologetic tone over a recent plea for his fellow Democrats to \u201cbully the shit out of\u201d the Republican president.<\/p>\n

Walz, who was Kamala Harris\u2019s running mate as she unsuccessfully ran for the White House against Trump in November, made those comments in a conversation with the Minnesota<\/a> news station KMSP that was published Thursday.<\/p>\n

They came after Walz<\/a> in late May urged his fellow Democrats \u201cto be a little meaner \u2026 a little more fierce\u201d to Trump \u2013 and \u201cbully the shit out of him back\u201d \u2013 as the party tried to regroup from its defeat to him in the fall.<\/p>\n

About two weeks later, on 14 June, an assassin fatally shot former Minnesota state house speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, at their home in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Park, investigators say. Police say the assassin also wounded Democratic state senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, at their home in nearby Champlin before surrendering to authorities the night of 15 June.<\/p>\n

KMSP\u2019s conversation with Walz was billed as the first television interview the governor had given since Hortman\u2019s assassinations. And, in apparent reference to some of the words he had previously aimed at Trump, Walz told the station: \u201cDo we have to watch some of that? Yeah.\u201d<\/p>\n

Walz, who eulogized<\/a> Melissa Hortman at her and her husband\u2019s funeral on 28 June, added: \u201cDonald Trump brings out the worst in people, and he brings out the worst in me \u2013 because I have certainly never been accused of that with anybody else.\u201d<\/p>\n

The governor said his anger with Trump \u2013 who investigators say was himself targeted by two assassination attempts during the campaign that vaulted him to a second presidency \u2013 stemmed from his pugnacious brand of politics.<\/p>\n

As an example, Walz accused Trump of \u2013 at best \u2013 ignoring the Hortmans in the wake of their killings. In the hours after the killings, the president released a statement in which he said he had \u201cbeen briefed on the terrible shooting that took place in Minnesota, which appears to be a targeted attack against state lawmakers\u201d.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s statement also said that \u201csuch horrific violence will not be tolerated\u201d. But, in speaking to reporters, the president made it a point to say that contacting Walz over the Hortmans\u2019 murders would be a \u201cwaste of time\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the governor of Minnesota is so whacked out,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWhy would I call him?\u201d<\/p>\n

Walz in turn told KMSP: \u201cWhen this state is grieving and this nation saw what happened here, Donald Trump<\/a> used it as an opportunity to attack me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The governor said he was still stricken with grief over the Hortmans\u2019 deaths and lamented that he did not get the chance to foster a friendship with Melissa when neither of them were \u201cin elected office\u201d any longer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s the piece that I regret,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A federal grand jury on Tuesday handed up various criminal charges<\/a> \u2013 including murder and stalking \u2013 against the suspect arrested in the shootings of the Hortmans and Hoffmans. Court documents unsealed alongside the filed charges contained a handwritten letter claiming that the suspect, 57-year-old Vance Boelter, was the shooter.<\/p>\n

The letter also made a claim dismissed as a lie by prosecutors and Walz: that the governor wanted Boelter to assassinate Minnesota\u2019s Democratic US senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith while threatening to harm the suspect\u2019s family if he refused.<\/p>\n

Walz said he had previously been aware of \u2013 but did not personally know \u2013 Boelter, whom the governor had reappointed in 2019 to serve on Minnesota\u2019s workforce development advisory board. Boelter had first been appointed to that panel in 2016 by Walz\u2019s predecessor, Mark Dayton.<\/p>\n

\u201cNever, to the best of my ability, was [I] anywhere around\u201d him, Walz said of Boelter. \u201c[I] certainly don\u2019t know him or talk to him.\u201d<\/p>\n
