{"id":730445,"date":"2026-04-15T19:56:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T19:56:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/730445\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T19:56:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T19:56:16","slug":"feds-in-chicago-get-first-guilty-plea-in-a-midway-blitz-case-but-not-for-assaulting-immigration-agents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/730445\/","title":{"rendered":"Feds in Chicago get first guilty plea in a Midway Blitz case \u2014 but not for assaulting immigration agents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Federal prosecutors in Chicago secured their first guilty plea<b> <\/b>tied to Operation Midway Blitz on Wednesday, though not for the assault charge they\u2019d originally leveled against Anthony Gonzalez Alvarez.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he pleaded guilty to concealing<b> <\/b>information about a crime, admitting that he falsely reported his Ford F-250 stolen to the Chicago Police Department after driving into the rear of a vehicle driven by immigration officers.<\/p>\n<p>The charge, officially known as \u201cmisprision of a felony,\u201d<b> <\/b>is apparently rare enough that it prompted an in-court discussion of how to pronounce \u201cmisprision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever heard of it,\u201d U.S. District Judge LaShonda Hunt<b> <\/b>told the lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>Alvarez, 27, is expected to pay $1,362 in restitution<b> <\/b>but avoid prison under the terms of a deal he struck with prosecutors. However, Hunt must first decide whether to accept or reject the agreement. She\u2019s deferred for now,<b> <\/b>and she set sentencing for July 22.<\/p>\n<p>Alvarez is among <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/2026\/tracker-federal-prosecutions-chicago-status-trumps-immigration-blitz-ice\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">32 known defendants<\/a> charged with nonimmigration crimes tied to Midway Blitz, the deportation campaign that rocked the Chicago area last year. Twenty of the 32 have been cleared, and three others are on track to have their cases dismissed.<\/p>\n<p>Four of the remaining eight are members of the group originally known as the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/immigration\/2026\/03\/16\/chicago-broadview-six-kat-abughazaleh-midway-blitz-trump-ice\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cBroadview Six\u201d<\/a> and face trial May 26. Another man, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/immigration\/2026\/01\/07\/new-indictment-cites-shooting-near-border-patrol-agents-in-chicago-still-doesnt-charge-gunman\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hector Gomez<\/a>, is set to plead guilty April 27 after being hit with<b> <\/b>weapons charges tied to Midway Blitz.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration used claims of \u201charrowing\u201d<b> <\/b>violence toward federal agents to justify a push to<b> <\/b>deploy National Guard troops<b> <\/b>into Chicago last fall. They were blocked initially by <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/donald-trump\/2025\/10\/09\/federal-judge-set-to-hear-arguments-in-high-stakes-national-guard-hearing\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.S. District Judge April Perry<\/a>, and eventually the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/donald-trump\/2025\/12\/23\/supreme-court-trump-national-guard-illinois\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.S. Supreme Court<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Even with Alvarez\u2019s guilty plea, no one in Chicago has been convicted in federal court of an act of violence toward agents during Midway Blitz.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Alvarez admitted that around 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 3, he followed a U.S. Customs and Border Protection vehicle<b> <\/b>on the South Side. As it turned right from West 61st Street onto South Kedzie Avenue, he drove into the rear passenger side of the feds\u2019 vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Later that day, Alvarez told CPD his truck had been stolen, he admitted.<\/p>\n<p>Alvarez pleaded guilty despite questions about the case previously raised by his defense attorney, Ricardo<b> <\/b>Meza. The attorney told Hunt in January that<b> <\/b>\u201cthe van that was allegedly hit has been repaired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not even in the condition that it was in when it was allegedly hit by my client, so we\u2019re not able to inspect it,\u201d Meza told Hunt on Jan. 29. \u201cBut despite that, judge, we also want to inspect it because we want to retrieve what\u2019s called the event data recorder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meza also said he\u2019d be seeking FBI agents\u2019<b> <\/b>notes because \u201cthere\u2019s a lot of confusion about what happened, when it happened, and how many times a vehicle was hit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie<b> <\/b>Stern<b> <\/b>told the judge Meza<b> <\/b>had the power to subpoena the vehicle himself, from the rental car company that was in possession of the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is with Enterprise,\u201d she said during the January<b> <\/b>hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Similar issues arose in the case of <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/immigration\/2026\/02\/03\/marimar-martinez-shot-border-patrol-chicago-speaks-out-after-good-pretti-deaths-i-am-their-voice\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Marimar Martine<\/a>z, the woman shot<b> <\/b>by a Border Patrol agent Oct. 4.
