The announcement coincides with STI Awareness Week, underscoring the urgency of the issue.

Never miss new stories in Harlem

Health officials say the move comes at a critical time. Recent 2024 data shows that while some STI rates have declined, major disparities persist across race, income, and neighborhoods. At the same time, HIV diagnoses have increased or remained steady for the fourth consecutive year.

“It is essential that New York City continues to invest in the resources that ensure access to HIV and STI prevention methods,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin in a press statement, pointing to ongoing inequities that disproportionately affect marginalized communities.

The city’s Condom Availability Program distributes millions of free safer sex products annually, reaching thousands of locations citywide. Under the renewed deal, participating organizations can order large quantities of condoms—including varieties like ultra-sensitive, extra strong, and flavored options—along with lubricant at no cost.

City leaders say affordability remains a major barrier to sexual health. State Senator Gustavo Rivera noted that rising living costs have made it harder for many residents to access contraception and treatment, increasing the need for publicly funded programs.

Despite encouraging signs—such as a 16.3% drop in primary and secondary syphilis rates and a 6.3% decline in chlamydia cases overall—health officials warn that disparities remain stark. STI rates in high-poverty neighborhoods are roughly three times higher than in wealthier areas, while Black women face syphilis rates nine times higher than white women.

Younger New Yorkers are also at heightened risk. Women ages 15 to 24 continue to experience disproportionately high rates of chlamydia, highlighting the need for targeted education and prevention efforts.

Officials say the renewed partnership is about more than distribution—it’s about access, equity, and normalization. By placing free condoms in everyday community spaces, the city aims to reduce stigma and make sexual health resources more accessible.

Photo: cottonbro studio, Pexels

Latest Posts:

Become a Harlem Insider!

From history to today’s headlines—everything Harlem, in your inbox.

By signing up, you’re agreeing to receive communications from Harlem World Magazine and our Privay Policy.

[5122
5229,90102,405,403,5226,5225,5228,5227,302428,25709,264420,67,586,132,5230,68,2969
post-730966","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york","tag-america","tag-condoms","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-newyork","tag-newyorkcity","tag-ny","tag-nyc","tag-nyc-health","tag-sexually-transmitted-infections","tag-stis","tag-united-states","tag-united-states-of-america","tag-unitedstates","tag-unitedstatesofamerica","tag-us","tag-usa
["GET
