{"id":73173,"date":"2025-07-18T17:11:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T17:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/73173\/"},"modified":"2025-07-18T17:11:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T17:11:11","slug":"girls-empowerment-camp-merges-sports-and-leadership-ahead-of-wnba-all-star-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/73173\/","title":{"rendered":"Girls&#8217; empowerment camp merges sports and leadership ahead of WNBA All-Star Weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A basketball camp for 150 middle-school girls highlighted inclusion and leadership on July 16, pairing Paralympic athletes with aspiring young players days before the WNBA All-Star Game.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, Group 1001 and the Women\u2019s Sports Foundation (WSF) hosted the two-day clinic centered on breaking barriers through sport.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/IMG_0763-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation basketball event July 2025.\" class=\"wp-image-128822\"  \/>(Photo\/Mia Moore)<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cI\u2019m GREAT\u201d program (Girls Respecting Each Other And Themselves) taught life skills to girls aged 11 to 14 through mentorship and basketball drills. Women coaches guided participants in activities designed to build confidence and decision-making.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Honoring Disability Pride Month, U.S. Paralympians Lindsay Zurbrugg and Emily Ann Oberst led a wheelchair basketball clinic. The session, co-organized by Indiana nonprofit Turnstone, gave attendees hands-on experience with adaptive techniques.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that providing these development mentoring programs, resources, and training will positively impact the lives of at-risk youth and will help guide these girls toward healthy and positive futures,\u201d said Steve Salem, President and CEO, Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. \u201cWith the help of generous partners like Group 1001 and the Women\u2019s Sports Foundation, we\u2019re able to provide direct programming and female mentorship.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/IMG_0754-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation basketball event July 2025.\" class=\"wp-image-128820 lazyload\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/400;\"\/>(Photo\/Mia Moore)<\/p>\n<p>During the event, Group 1001, the Women\u2019s Sports Foundation and Parity presented Turnstone with a $50,000 grant through the \u201cGainbridge Assists\u201d initiative.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The donation addresses stark disparities in sports access.
