Multi-award winning composer Alan Bergman, who with his wife Marilyn penned such songs as \u201cThe Way We Were,\u201d \u201cWhat Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life,\u201d and the themes to the film \u201cIn the Heat of the Night,\u201d and TV\u2019s \u201cAlice,\u201d has died at his Los Angeles home. He was 99.<\/p>\n
Family spokesman Ken Sunshine said in a statement Bergman died Thursday and had, in recent months, suffered from respiratory issues \u201cbut continued to write songs till the very end.\u201d<\/p>\n
Deadline characterized Alan and Marilyn Bergman as \u201ctwo of the most influential lyricists of 20th century American music.\u201d<\/p>\n
Their collaborations with the likes of Michel Legrand, Marvin Hamlisch, Quincy Jones and John Williams earned four Emmy Awards, three Oscars and two Grammys. There were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1980.<\/p>\n
Other noted songs by the Bergmans include the Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond hit \u201cYou Don\u2019t Bring Me Flowers,\u201d \u201cNice \u201dn\u201d Easy for Frank Sinatra\u2019s 1960 album of the same name plus \u201cPapa, Can You Hear Me?\u201d and \u201cThe Way He Makes Me Feel,\u201d from the 1983 film \u201cYentl, directed by Streisand.<\/p>\n
Their TV themes included sitcoms created by the late Norman Lear: \u201cAnd Then There\u2019s Maude\u201d from \u201cMaude\u201d starring Bea Arthur and \u201cGood Times\u201d for the show of the same name.<\/p>\n
Bergman was born in Brooklyn in 1925, He moved to Los Angeles in the 1950s and earned a master\u2019s degree in music from UCLA.<\/p>\n
In 1958, he married his wife Marilyn and the two continued working together until her death in 2022.<\/p>\n
