He ran against six relatively unknown candidates.<\/p>\n<p>In his inaugural speech, he said he would not \u201cbetray the people who mobilized to honor him and reaffirm their support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Central African country is <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/republicofcongo-election-sassou-nguesso-cef3c17649eace84af4a4363f44c46d1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">struggling<\/a> with a sky-high debt-to-GDP ratio &#8211; which measures a country\u2019s debt compared to its economic output &#8211; according to the World Bank, and climbing youth unemployment. <\/p>\n<p>Sassou N\u2019Guesso is the third-longest ruling African leader, after <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cameroon-biya-election-africa-youth-president-09457b9ce277b3ce96056cadcdc9ffb0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cameroon<\/a> \u2019s Paul Biya and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/equatorial-guinea-internet-shutdown-africa-d7daacc641475743972b33eaffffa4fc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Equatorial Guinea<\/a> \u2019s Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.
