{"id":73464,"date":"2025-07-18T19:42:27","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T19:42:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/73464\/"},"modified":"2025-07-18T19:42:27","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T19:42:27","slug":"toronto-opens-biidaasige-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/73464\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto opens Biidaasige Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">One of the largest and most complex public parks in Toronto is set to open on Saturday, a project 18 years in the making.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Biidaasige Park, pronounced \u201cbee-daw-si-geh,\u201d means \u201csunlight shining toward us\u201d in Anishinaabemowin and sprawls across 40 hectares of land\u2013the largest park to open in Toronto in a generation\u2013in the city\u2019s redeveloped Port Lands, near Cherry Street.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/ACVF7EK7QRHAFC7H3LLSOKJY2I.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"600\"\/>Biidaasige Park Biidaasige Park, the biggest park to open in Toronto in a generation, opens on July 19, 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Construction of the park started in 2017, and included the creation of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/toronto\/article\/new-stretch-of-don-river-meets-lake-ontario-in-milestone-for-toronto-port-lands-redevelopment\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/toronto\/article\/new-stretch-of-don-river-meets-lake-ontario-in-milestone-for-toronto-port-lands-redevelopment\/\">new mouth and kilometre-long extension of the Don River<\/a>, a key part of $1.35 billion Port Lands flood protection project to protect the space from a regional storm or 100-year flood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe moved a river, that\u2019s what we\u2019re celebrating today, we literally moved a river,\u201d Julie Dabrusin, Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Canada, said at Friday\u2019s unveiling.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/QQSIU4P545AYZDJ5P3V5KCV2TI.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"600\"\/>Biidaasige Park Biidaasige Park in Toronto is seen on July 18, 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAnd by doing that, when we look at this place, these were lands, contaminated lands. These were lands where people avoided them. And now with the opening of the park we have people who are going to be able to come here and enjoy and celebrate. It\u2019s about community building,\u201d Dabrusin said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/DPBD3YIWUZAL3BNNHZ4IQ2TFL4.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"600\"\/>Biidaasige Park A structure in Toronto&#8217;s newest park, Biidaasige Park, is seen on July 18, 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Christopher Glaisek, chief planning and design officer at Waterfront Toronto, says wildlife has been slowing coming back to the space since the work started, including bald eagles, swans, and fish species he said the harbour hasn\u2019t seen in 50 years, including bluegill and smallmouth bass.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/VUXHAGVDXZDXLDXTLRZVDGAD74.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"600\"\/>Biidaasige Park Biidaasige Park, located in Toronto&#8217;s Port Lands, opens to the public on July 19, 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe wanted people to be able to come back down here\u2026because it was in a concrete box for the last 100 years and that was very unappealing, not a place you would want to go, not a place you would ever celebrate the river,\u201d Glaisek told CP24 Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">While the park will open Saturday, construction is still ongoing on the manmade island, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/local\/toronto\/2024\/11\/02\/torontos-new-island-gets-a-name-ookwemin-minising\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/local\/toronto\/2024\/11\/02\/torontos-new-island-gets-a-name-ookwemin-minising\/\">dubbed Ookwemin Minising<\/a>, with the construction of 14,000 new homes for 25,000 people slated to begin next year as part of a $975-million investment from all three levels of government.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/QRXW52OGANEEPHLSE2MYSRFOGU.jpeg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/>Biidaasige Park Biidaasige Park in Toronto is seen from the CP24 chopper on July 18, 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow was on hand for the park\u2019s unveiling Friday and said the previous industrial space was \u201creally dirty\u201d and \u201cterrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt was a pile of garbage, and here we are. Wow, yeah, it is just amazing\u2026let us just be very grateful. Feel gratitude.
