{"id":736672,"date":"2026-04-18T12:26:36","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T12:26:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/736672\/"},"modified":"2026-04-18T12:26:36","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T12:26:36","slug":"nyc-avoids-dreaded-doorman-strike-with-tentative-union-agreement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/736672\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC avoids dreaded doorman strike with tentative union agreement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They\u2019re taking the back door.<\/p>\n<p>The union\u00a0repping\u00a0thousands of doormen, porters and superintendents across the Big Apple announced Friday it\u00a0has\u00a0reached a tentative agreement\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/15\/us-news\/nyc-doormen-porters-supers-set-to-vote-to-go-on-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">to stave off a strike<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 32BJ SEIU union said\u00a0it\u00a0had\u00a0struck a preliminary deal with the\u00a0Realty Advisory Board, the\u00a0group\u00a0that represents\u00a0city building owners, after threatening to walk off the job in a fight over wages and healthcare.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/13\/us-news\/nyc-ny-politics-live-updates-on-zohran-mamdani-governors-race-more-april-13-14-15-16-17-18-19\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Follow live updates on Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s socialist agenda and the latest in NYC politics<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The union repping thousands of doormen, porters and superintendents across the Big Apple announced Friday it has reached a tentative agreement to stave off a strike. stefano Giovannini for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>The 34,000-member strong labor group \u2014\u00a0which was\u00a0set to walk off the job Tuesday in what would have been its <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/16\/real-estate\/nyc-doormen-strike-2026-what-a-walkout-by-34000-workers-means-for-1-5-million-new-yorkers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">first strike since 1991<\/a> \u2014 revealed it scored wins on all its demands.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was never any doubt that [the RAB] wanted to do the right thing for the workers and people who take care of the buildings,\u201d\u00a0Manny Pastreich, president of 32BJ SEIU, said at a press conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was just how we\u2019re going to get there and whether we have the money to get there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of the deal outlined, union employees will see an <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/15\/us-news\/nyc-doormen-porters-supers-set-to-vote-to-go-on-strike\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">average $4.50 hourly wage<\/a> increase across four years, with some members getting as much as a $7 per hour hike \u2014\u00a0\u00a0in what Pastrich\u00a0called \u201clife-changing for new hires.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That means the $62,000 starting rate will jump to $71,000 by the end of the current contract in 2030.<\/p>\n<p>All union members will also see a 15%\u00a0pension\u00a0boost starting in July, said Pastreich.<\/p>\n<p>Some doorman will get more than a $7 per hour hike to their wages. Christopher Sadowski for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>The tentative deal will secure healthcare benefits for its members with no premiums for sharing with family members. Additionally, the deal eliminates the proposed two-tier workforce that would have allowed lower wages for new hires.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis agreement is a win-win, win-win,\u201d\u00a0said Howard Rothschild, president of the RAB.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a win for\u00a0employers. It\u2019s a win for the union. And\u00a0most importantly, it\u2019s a win for our employees,\u201d he said, \u201cAnd the last is a win for the residents of this great city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doormen will get a boost to their pensions. Stefano Giovannini for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Rothschild would not say whether the preliminary deal would result in <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/14\/real-estate\/posh-new-yorkers-are-fretting-about-looming-doorman-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">maintenance charge increases<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0residents of the roughly 3,300 buildings served by union doormen, porters, handymen and more.<\/p>\n<p>But he said the RAB was exploring money-saving avenues to mitigate any excess burdens.<\/p>\n<p>Union members will begin voting next week on whether to accept the deal, with Pastreich saying the count will be revealed May 28.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"They\u2019re taking the back door.
