What should you do if you see one?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EBCZCL5PFVFKHDMOVAR7EP6GNE\">Swarms of bees are flocking to trash cans and other sites that invite frequent human interaction all around midtown Manhattan this season, according to multiple media reports, including one in the New York Post. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y65QYZ62DVBXNP42VF6AQL2HGU\">\u201cIt\u2019s a fascinating and terrifying experience,\u201d Nick Rozak, head beekeeper at the nonprofit<a href=\"https:\/\/beeunyc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/beeunyc.org\/\"> Bee University NYC<\/a> and Staten Island chapter president of the New York Bee Club, told <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/19\/us-news\/why-are-there-bee-swarms-buzzing-through-nyc-and-what-to-do-if-you-see-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/19\/us-news\/why-are-there-bee-swarms-buzzing-through-nyc-and-what-to-do-if-you-see-one\/\">the Post.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BZFCDYYUGRHWRBBQSQ3KBGHTKU\">\u201cYou\u2019re standing there, and there\u2019s 20 or 30,000 bees in a tornado flying through Midtown Manhattan, he told the outlet. \u201dIt\u2019s definitely going to make people pay attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E3NON2J3VFHCLA346P7S7TCSDA\">More than 200 species of bees have been spotted in the city\u2019s trees, light poles and buildings, according to the city Health Department, and summer is the peak time for them to seek out new homes and food sources. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3FZQNTTVXNA3FMDPAT3WE7I744\">\u201cA colony of thousands of bees may form a swarm when it is time to leave their hive and form a new one,\u201d according to the city website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PCNX6IUM5VBQJGSIRTK737Q6OI\">Beehives or nests are often located in trees, in rotting wood, on plant stalks, on light poles or on buildings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/doh\/health\/health-topics\/bees.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/doh\/health\/health-topics\/bees.page\">the city agency said.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QR2RHQ2FDRARHHKNEDJMLBN25I\">Bees are usually less dangerous than <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/site\/doh\/health\/health-topics\/wasps.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wasps<\/a> or hornets, which are more aggressive and \u2014 unlike bees \u2014 can sting you multiple times without dying, according to the city Health Department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EYRLZ7KL4VEARFXQQXTVZZT37I\">Rozak told the Post that the bees aren\u2019t setting up a new home in the places they\u2019re being spotted. The worker bees are just \u201changing out, waiting for further instructions\u201d while scout bees actively look for more hospitable spots for a permanent hive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"47LWTILYVFH4HFFQEDESM6XIFA\">The Manhattan swarming is easy to spot because the city lacks greenery, an expert told the Post. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZTC2ABQBYJBT3BO6QDN7HBHUUA\">A surge in Manhattan\u2019s corporate rooftop beehives has also led to the higher numbers down where we\u2019re walking, experts said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3GSKUMD6QVHSRJX4N2KYFMH2N4\">Rozak explained that responsible beekeepers prevent regular swarms by \u201ctricking\u201d bees into staying put. It\u2019s not clear if the recent Manhattan swarms are being caused by a beekeeper or \u201cferal\u201d hives, he said. <\/p>\n<p>Call 911<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MTWXCVCLY5EX3KKKUFOGBTSFDI\">New Yorkers witnessing a bee swarm on city property are urged to call 911, according to the Health Department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3FUXXFNNJJFJ7NDK6RGINILYI4\">The city has a \u201cbee cop\u201d available to handle swarms, bee experts told the Post.
