{"id":73995,"date":"2025-07-19T00:18:16","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T00:18:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/73995\/"},"modified":"2025-07-19T00:18:16","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T00:18:16","slug":"trump-files-libel-lawsuit-over-wall-street-journal-report-on-jeffrey-epsteins-birthday-letters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/73995\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump files libel lawsuit over Wall Street Journal report on Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s birthday letters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      CNN<br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9avn1m008h26qj3j5k3ffr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            President Donald Trump filed a<a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/26014838\/trump-files-libel-lawsuit-over-wall-street-journal-report-on-jeffrey-epsteins-birthday-letters.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> libel lawsuit<\/a> against the publisher of the Wall Street Journal and reporters who wrote a story about a collection of letters gifted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/09\/politics\/what-to-know-about-the-jeffrey-epstein-saga\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeffrey Epstein<\/a> for his 50th birthday in 2003, including a note bearing Trump\u2019s name and an outline of a naked woman.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9ckwlx00003b6n5m3z7brh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The lawsuit, which seeks at least $20 billion, is an extraordinary escalation of Trump\u2019s ongoing legal campaign against media companies he views as opponents. Trump has denied that he wrote the note.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9f4pdv00063b5zbzow03jp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the 18-page filing, Trump\u2019s legal team accuses the Journal\u2019s parent company of engaging in \u201cglaring failures in journalistic ethics and standards of accurate reporting.\u201d The filing notes that the Journal, in its story, did not publish the drawing or the letter that its reporters allege Trump authored.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9f4xk6000h3b5z80dc0i43@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe reason for those failures is because no authentic letter or drawing exists,\u201d Trump\u2019s lawyer wrote in the lawsuit, which was filed in a federal court in Miami.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9b6345000t3b6nl8vt8jvr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump had threatened to sue almost immediately after the story, which was written by Journal reporters Khadeeja Safdar and Joe Palazzolo, was published late Thursday afternoon. Both reporters are named as defendants in the lawsuit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9bc49a00173b6nnoet4aia@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe Wall Street Journal, and Rupert Murdoch, personally, were warned directly by President Donald J. Trump that the supposed letter they printed by President Trump to Epstein was a FAKE and, if they print it, they will be sued,\u201d the president said in a Truth Social post.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9bc49a00183b6nel6387f4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The president added in that post that Murdoch, the owner of News Corp, the Journal\u2019s parent company, \u201cstated that he would take care of it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9bc49a00193b6nw8gh2kct@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBut, obviously, did not have the power to do so,\u201d Trump added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9axt1900073b6n3cpo0z2d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CNN has reached out to the Wall Street Journal for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9bsnon00003b5z1v8apnyz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The president\u2019s relationship with Epstein, the late convicted sex offender who died in a New York City jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, has come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9btdzz00043b5zvhdjiv8m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump said during his 2024 campaign that he would consider releasing additional files on Epstein, vowing to fulfill the demands of influential right-wing figures who have long pushed for increase governmental transparency around the case and publicly casted doubt on whether his death was a suicide, as was ruled by multiple official investigations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9btmhu00063b5zrgz7hlac@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A memo released by his Justice Department earlier this month claimed there is no evidence that Epstein, who rubbed shoulders with some of the most influential men in politics and business during the late 20th century, maintained a \u201cclient list\u201d that named or implicated these men in alleged sex crimes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9btt5o00083b5z3y66wsay@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That revelation has disappointed some of the president\u2019s most loyal followers and was the catalyst of a split that threatened to fracture his MAGA coalition.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9crkwx00003b6nnk9tq68u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump has had a hot-and-cold professional relationship with Murdoch that has spanned decades. Murdoch\u2019s company also owns Fox News, the most-watched and most-prominent Trump-friendly cable news network, which also employs the president\u2019s daughter-in-law Lara Trump.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9cjzcq000a3b5zmdagx6r8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Legal experts consulted by CNN said they could not recall any past instances of a sitting president suing a news outlet over a story.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9fd4zh000r3b5z74b216zz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n             \u201cAs far as I can tell, no sitting president has ever sued a reporter or media outlet or media executive for allegedly defaming him,\u201d First Amendment attorney Ted Boutrous told CNN. \u201cWhen you have the presidential bully pulpit, you simply don\u2019t need to sue to get to the truth.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9cjzcq000b3b5zfhq0l267@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump filed several suits in 2024 while he was running for reelection. In March of that year, he sued ABC, claiming George Stephanopoulos and ABC News defamed him when the anchor repeatedly said on air that a jury found Trump had \u201craped\u201d E. Jean Carroll.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9cjzcq000c3b5zvwg5zt6z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A jury found that Trump had sexually abused Carroll and held him liable for battery, but the jury did not find that she proved he had raped her. (Trump has denied all wrongdoing toward Carroll.) ABC\u2019s parent company Disney settled with Trump and agreed to pay $16 million toward his future presidential library, setting a precedent of sorts for other settlement deals.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9cjzcq000d3b5zdwwt7yx9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Just two weeks ago, Trump agreed to drop his October 2024 lawsuit against CBS News over a segment on \u201c60 Minutes\u201d during the closing stretch of the campaign. Paramount said it would pay $16 million for the library.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd9cjzcq000e3b5z793t8u0s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meta and X have also settled with Trump over lawsuits that predated his second term in office.
