The 26-year-old grandson of Duke basketball legend Mike Krzyzewski is\u00a0accused of hitting a 15-year-old bicyclist over the weekend. The boy later died.<\/p>\n

Joseph Savarino faces a misdemeanor charge of driving while impaired after the crash just before 9 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Cole Mill Road and Wyndham Lane in Durham.<\/p>\n

Durham police said Savarino was driving a Ford Explorer north on Cole Mill\u00a0Road when he hit the teenage\u00a0boy on an electronic bicycle<\/a>. Police said the boy died at the scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Public records show Savarino had a 0.11 blood alcohol content in his breathalyzer test conducted around 12:45 a.m. Sunday. Records show Savarino admitted to authorities that he drank earlier in the night.<\/p>\n

Authorities are holding Savarino at the Durham County Detention Center on a $100,000 secured bond.<\/p>\n

A judge also issued an order to revoke Savarino\u2019s license.<\/p>\n

Savarino\u2019s brother, Michael Savarino, was charged in 2022 with DWI and sentenced to 12 months of probation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Both Joseph and Michael Savarino are sons of Krzyzewski’s daughter, Debbie.\u00a0Michael Savarino was a walk-on for the Duke basketball team from 2020-2022 and played for his grandfather in 13 games.<\/p>\n

The 15-year-old boy\u2019s mother identified her son, Jack O\u2019Shea, as the victim in a Facebook post on Sunday night<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with unfathomable sadness that [my husband] and I share that our perfect, smart, athletic, fearless and handsome baby boy, Jack, passed away yesterday, April 18th, at just 15 years old,\u201d Allison O\u2019Shea wrote of her late son. \u201cWe are finding comfort in what was his last perfect day.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe woke up and asked to go to confession at Immaculate Conception Church. He then played two baseball games with his high school team, where he did what he always did \u2014 showed up fully and excelled at first base. Later, he went on his usual afternoon bike ride with friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jack O’Shea played on the Cardinal Gibbons’ freshman baseball team.<\/p>\n

Allison O\u2019Shea said the family would soon share the details of Jack O\u2019Shea\u2019s funeral services.<\/p>\n
