\n\t\t\t\t\t\tResidents in Clinton were surprised this past weekend by multiple sightings of a black bear roaming through backyards and climbing fences, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.Bill Miley, a Clinton resident, spotted the bear on his surveillance camera Friday night. “I said, ‘Look at this man, get over here, Susan,” Miley said. The video showed the black bear strolling through the backyard of Miley’s home on Lakeridge Lane. “We just never thought a bear would come this close,” Miley said. Miley, who has hunted wildlife recreationally for years, said this was the first time he had ever seen a bear. Anthony Ballard, Black Bear Program leader with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, said there were three sightings of the bear over the weekend in multiple Clinton neighborhoods. “They don’t want conflict with humans,” Ballard said. “They don’t go out looking for it, but be aware, and if you see a bear, keep your distance.”Ballard said the bear is likely a young male leaving his mother\u2019s nest to establish his own home range. “It’s kind of like a teenage boy on his own for the first time,” Ballard said. He said it\u2019s common for bears to roam during the spring and summer months, and advised residents to secure their trash, empty bird feeders, and avoid leaving pet food outside, as bears are often driven by hunger. “They are following their nose. They don’t really know where to go. They are on their own for the first time, maybe not making the best decisions,” Ballard said. Miley said he took precautions to secure his home but found the experience enjoyable. “Yeah, I have no problems with the bear being back around here. I think it’s really neat,” Miley said. Ballard also said that seeing black bears in Mississippi is a positive sign, as the species was once nearly extinct due to habitat loss and overhunting. Their population is now steadily increasing. Mississippi is home to two types of black bears, the American black bear and the Louisiana black bear.
