Curious bobcat confronts a diamondback

THE DESERT – My kids love animal battle books. Perhaps you’ve seen them at the bookstore or library. These types of books usually have titles like “Ultimate Animal Matchups,” “Animal Kingdom Royal Rumble,” or “Who Would Win?”

I have to admit that some of the matchups are highly intriguing. After all, who among us isn’t curious about whether a leopard could beat a Komodo dragon in a fight. There are hundreds of these hypothetical matchups to explore, and once they’ve been exhausted, authors simply move on to bizarre battles like “Bengal tiger versus mosquito.”

Think you know the winner of that last matchup? The books are usually a bit sneaky and conclude with something like, “Although the tiger was clearly more powerful than the mosquito, the tiny insect bit the tiger and infected it with an incurable disease.”

Mosquito wins!

The animal encounter in this video is fun to see. Don’t worry, there’s no battle to speak of. But two species that don’t spend a lot of time together come face-to-face.

Where do you think this bobcat and rattlesnake encounter occurred? Given the species involved, it’s definitely in a Southwestern state. So if you guessed Arizona, you’re correct. Here’s how the user who uploaded the footage described the scene:

“Snake was in his usual resting place behind my fence. Critter traffic is plentiful, and a bobcat strolled by early morning and confronted the snake. Short altercation as they both backed down after a few seconds.”

I don’t blame this bobcat for moving on so quickly. There are few things in the world more intimidating than a big rattlesnake poised for a strike. Even as the snake gracefully made its way toward cover, it was obvious that it would have no problem giving that bobcat a chomp.

Have You Seen This?

THE DESERT – My kids love animal battle books.
