DedMityay \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>When you wake up, your body experiences spikes in stress hormones \u2014 as well as a handful of things that affect bloodflow, like the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, slight dehydration from the night before and slow fibrinolytic activity, or the process that helps keep blood from clotting.<\/p>\n<p>All of these things put you more at risk of cardiovascular disease \u2014\u00a0the No. 1 killer in the US \u2014\u00a0 especially if other risk factors are already at play.<\/p>\n<p>These are the four health conditions that can be deadliest in the morning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heart attack<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Smokers and people with hypertension, high cholesterol, family history of heart disease, chronic stress, poor sleep habits or a history of previous heart disease are especially vulnerable to a heart attack regardless of the time of day, but might experience extra cardiac distress in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>Cardiovascular events are \u201cmore common in winter, at the beginning of each month, on Mondays (in working people) and during the early morning hours of each day,\u201d Dr. William J. Elliott wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ajh\/article-abstract\/14\/S6\/291S\/128226?redirectedFrom=fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">in the American Journal of Hypertension<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Between 6 a.m. and noon, there\u2019s a 40% higher risk of heart attack, and a 29% increased risk of dying from it.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49707602;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39150074\" width=\"883\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/126049033.jpg\" alt=\"An ambulance with an open door and a stretcher loaded with medical equipment.\" class=\"wp-image-39150074\"  \/>Heart attacks, stroke, aneurysm and embolism can happen at random any time of day, but the body undergoes certain physiological changes in the morning that can trigger episodes. Silverpics \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stroke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s an even higher risk of stroke in the hours after waking up: a staggering 49%, according to Dr. Elliott.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the same reasons and risk factors that apply for morning heart attacks are true for stroke, too, which is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utmbhealth.com\/services\/neurology\/services\/stroke-and-vascular#:~:text=Stroke%20reduces%20mobility%20in%20more,the%20U.S.%20have%20a%20stroke.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">fifth leading cause of death<\/a> in the US.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/01.str.29.5.992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">analysis by the American Heart Association<\/a> found that both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke \u2014\u00a0stroke caused by a blocked artery or clot and stroke caused by a hemorrhaging or leaking artery, respectively \u2014 were significantly more likely to occur in the morning hours, contradicting previous studies that found strokes were more likely to occur during sleep.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm happens when the body\u2019s main artery \u2014 which runs from the base of the diaphragm to the abdomen and supplies the lower body with blood \u2014 balloons out and weakens.<\/p>\n<p>Studies show that RAAA also has a strong circadian connection, as it\u2019s closely linked to systolic blood pressure and hypertension.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Drugs that can help control heart rate and early morning blood pressure spikes may help manage RAAA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pulmonary embolism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/health\/cancer-linked-pulmonary-embolisms-catherine-oharas-cause-of-death-revealed\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pulmonary embolism<\/a> occurs when a blood clot blocks a major artery in the lungs, and can be fatal if not treated immediately.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/7897823\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Studies show<\/a> fatal pulmonary embolisms also have a morning pattern for similar reasons as the other conditions listed above, but factors like sex and age might affect timing and severity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Waking up on the wrong side of the bed is the least of your worries.
