James Gunn<\/a> is detailing how Henry Cavill<\/a> was informed he would no longer play Superman<\/a> in the DCU. Gunn, who wrote and directed the latest \u201cSuperman\u201d film<\/a>, was appointed co-head of DC Studios after the WBD merger. Cavill was teased to reprising the role during a \u201cBlack Adam\u201d cameo<\/a> in 2022 while Gunn, though, was already in the works on a script that centered on a younger version of the titular character. \u201cSuperman\u201d was a casualty during the changing of the guards at DC, and that left Cavill in the dust after starring as the hero in three previous features. David Corenswet was later cast in the lead role, as announced<\/a> in 2023, with \u201cSuperman\u201d being Gunn\u2019s first feature on his rebooted DCU slate<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Now, Gunn is recalling the discussion he had with Cavill to inform him that he wouldn\u2019t be back as Clark Kent. \u201cIt\u2019s terrible,\u201d Gunn said during Josh Horowitz\u2019s acclaimed<\/a> \u201cHappy Sad Confused\u201d podcast in the below video of how the whole ordeal was handled at WBD. \u201cBelieve it or not, the day we were dealing with trying to figure out if we could take the job at DC Studios, [\u2026] the day the deal closed, all of a sudden, they were announcing that Henry was back. And I was like, \u2018What is going on? We know what the plan is. The plan was to come in and do \u201cSuperman.\u201d\u2018 It was really unfair to him and a total bummer.\u201d <\/p>\n

Gunn added of the internal studio mismanagement at the time, \u201cThere was a vacuum at the time and a lot of people were\u2026 They had a take on what they wanted to do at DC and they were trying to force their way and it was just never part of the equation for [WBD CEO] David Zaslav. We came in, and that was really unfortunate. I\u2019m like, \u2018This poor guy.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Gunn and his co-chair Peter Safran \u201csat down\u201d with Cavill to discuss the change. \u201cHe was an absolute gentleman and a great guy about it,\u201d Gunn said of Cavill\u2019s reaction. \u201cHe said, \u2018The only thing I ask is that I\u2019m able to reveal it myself<\/a> as opposed to coming from you guys.\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018That\u2019s a class act.’\u201d <\/p>\n
