{"id":74823,"date":"2025-07-19T07:37:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T07:37:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/74823\/"},"modified":"2025-07-19T07:37:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T07:37:12","slug":"meta-rejects-european-commissions-ai-code-of-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/74823\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta Rejects European Commission\u2019s AI Code of Practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta<\/a> will not sign the <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/index_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Commission<\/a>\u2019s code of practice for general-purpose AI models, Chief Global Affairs Officer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/joel-kaplan-63905618?trk=public_post_feed-actor-name\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joel Kaplan<\/a> said in a Friday (July 18) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/joel-kaplan-63905618_europe-is-heading-down-the-wrong-path-on-activity-7351928745668055042-XuF7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> on LinkedIn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis Code introduces a number of legal uncertainties for model developers, as well as measures which go far beyond the scope of the <a href=\"https:\/\/artificialintelligenceact.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI Act<\/a>,\u201d Kaplan wrote in the post.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaplan added that more than 40 of Europe\u2019s largest businesses signed a letter earlier this month, asking the European Commission to halt the implementation of the AI Act.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe share concerns raised by these businesses that this overreach will throttle the development and deployment of frontier AI models in Europe, and stunt European companies looking to build businesses on top of them,\u201d Kaplan wrote.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/top-european-ceos-plead-for-pause-in-ai-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> July 4 that 46 leaders of top European companies signed an open letter calling for a two-year pause on implementation of the AI Act, saying \u201cunclear, overlapping and increasingly complex EU regulations\u201d make it harder to do business in the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Commission published the final version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/contents-code-gpai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General-Purpose AI Code of Practice<\/a> on July 10, saying this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/artificial-intelligence\/2025\/european-union-publishes-final-ai-code-guide-compliance-tech-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voluntary framework<\/a> is designed to help artificial intelligence (AI) companies comply with the European Union\u2019s AI Act.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The code of practice seeks to clarify legal obligations under the act for providers of general-purpose AI models, especially those posing systemic risks like ones that could aid in the development of chemical and biological weapons.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AI Act, which was approved in 2024, is the first comprehensive legal framework governing AI.
