{"id":748344,"date":"2026-04-23T21:09:47","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T21:09:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/748344\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T21:09:47","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T21:09:47","slug":"24000-year-old-zombie-worm-gets-thawed-immediately-starts-reproducing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/748344\/","title":{"rendered":"24,000-year-old zombie worm gets thawed, immediately starts reproducing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A fascinating discovery pulled from Siberia&#8217;s permafrost has shed light on the possibility of life surviving in icy conditions and ignited fresh hope for the future of cryopreservation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Scientists have recovered a 24,000-year-old worm-like creature called a rotifer from a sample of permafrost, as the Indian Defence Review <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/indiandefencereview.com\/scientists-revived-24000-year-animal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:reported;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to the analysis published in the journal <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/current-biology\/fulltext\/S0960-9822(21)00624-2?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS0960982221006242%3Fshowall%3Dtrue\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Current Biology;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Current Biology<\/a>, it had remained frozen since the Late Pleistocene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Under meticulous laboratory conditions, they thawed the tiny creature \u2014 a multicellular but microscopic organism \u2014 and were delighted to see it begin to move and function again as if it had never been frozen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In fact, not only did the rotifer move, but it even reproduced asexually, creating more like it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Our report is the hardest proof as of today that multicellular animals could withstand tens of thousands of years in cryptobiosis, the state of almost completely arrested metabolism,&#8221; said lead researcher Stas Malavin, per the Indian Defence Review.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Living organisms have been revived from long-term stasis in ice before. However, those were much simpler creatures, mostly single-celled organisms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The more complex a living thing is, the more likely it is to be damaged by the process of being frozen, and the more difficult it is to bring it to a state of cryopreservation in which it can rest safely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, humanity will need to unravel this mystery if it ever intends to use cryopreservation in any of the ways that science fiction has dreamed up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Being alive in the year 2026 is an impressive achievement for an organism born in the heyday of mammoths and saber-tooth tigers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sadly, the news is not all good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ancient microbes, such as viruses, are among the living things preserved in permafrost, and because they are biologically simpler than a rotifer, they are easier to revive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Some have actually proven to be infectious after being warmed up.
