Early voting in this race continues through April 28, with election day on May 2.<\/p>\n
“Literally the day after early voting ends for the May 2nd election, early voting begins for the May 16th City of Houston runoff,” Hudspeth said.<\/p>\n
Houston City Council District C opened up when the former council member, Abbie Kamin, triggered Texas’ resign-to-run law by announcing her candidacy for Harris County Attorney. She has since been appointed the interim county attorney, filling the seat formerly held by now-Congressman Christian Menefee. Both Kamin and Menefee are Democrats.<\/p>\n
The first round of the special election to fill Kamin’s seat, held earlier this month, saw a crowded field, with none of the candidates clearing the 50% bar needed to avoid a runoff. The second-round candidates include community organizer Joe Panzarella and former Houston City Hall staffer Nick Hellyar.<\/p>\n
Two days after election day for the District C runoff, early voting begins for runoffs in the 2026 Texas Republican and Democratic primary elections.<\/p>\n
Republicans will have the choice between Senator John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton in the U.S. Senate race. Democrats will choose between state Rep. Vikki Goodwin and labor organizer Marcos V\u00e9lez for lieutenant governor. Voters of both parties will get to weigh in on the finalists in the attorney general’s race, in which state Sen. Mayes Middleton and Congressman Chip Roy are running for the Republican nomination, and state Sen. Nathan Johnson and former Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski for the Democratic nomination. Several congressional seats, redrawn during last year’s redistricting fight, will also be on the ballot across the region.<\/p>\n
Early voting in this last \u2014 and largest \u2014 set of elections runs from May 18 through May 22, with election day on Tuesday, May 26.<\/p>\n
“We\u2019ve had a lot of back-to-back elections in Harris County, but this is the first for three in one month,” Hudspeth said. “We have been preparing since last fall for primaries, the special election for Congressional District 18 [to fill the seat vacant between the death of Congressman Sylvester Turner in March 2025 and Menefee’s election in January], and we just knew they would keep coming.”<\/p>\n
Hudspeth said her team has been working round-the-clock since January, with no time off or vacations, to prepare for the run that kicked off with early voting for the first round of primary elections in February.<\/p>\n
“There are many times we\u2019re having a conversation where we have to stop each other and say, \u2018Okay, which election are you talking about right now?'” she said.<\/p>\n
Hudspeth noted there are many local jurisdictions, such as the cities of Friendswood and Humble, that are holding their own elections on May 2.<\/p>\n
Finally, Hudspeth had an important reminder for voters who mail in their ballots and have requested and received approval to do so for the whole year.<\/p>\n
“There\u2019s a case where they could be getting multiple ballots by mail at a time for the different elections \u2026 they [need to] make sure they put the right ballot inside the right carrier envelope,” Hudspeth said.<\/p>\n
Hudspeth said people should be careful to make sure they are not, for example, putting a May 2nd ballot in a May 26th carrier envelope.<\/p>\n
