EDDINGTON.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>The latest:<\/strong> Director Ari Aster\u2019s fourth feature, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/eddington\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Eddington<\/strong><\/a> from A24, stars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/leaf_phoenix\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joaquin Phoenix<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/pedro_pascal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pedro Pascal<\/a> in a New Mexico showdown during COVID-19 lockdown.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Picture a Western movie in your head and the first thing that might come to mind is cowboys, Indians, gunfights, heading people off at the pass, and a clear division between the good guys in white hats and the bad guys in black hats. You might think of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/sergio_leone\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sergio Leone<\/a> and Italian-made spaghetti westerns starring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/clint_eastwood\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Clint Eastwood<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/lee_van_cleef\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lee Van Cleef<\/a>, or classic American-made films starring people like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/john_wayne\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Wayne<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/randolph_scott\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Randolph Scott<\/a>. You may even think of the incredible Mel Brooks Western parody Blazing Saddles.<\/p>\n<p>That all changed with the tastes of moviegoers in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Westerns were suddenly out of fashion and became a rare beast altogether. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/tv\/hee_haw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hee-Haw<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/tv\/the_beverly_hillbillies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Beverly Hillbillies<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/tv\/petticoat_junction\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Petticoat Junction<\/a> were all cancelled at the same time on TV in a \u201crural purge.\u201d Folks went to the cinema to see spaceships or giant sharks instead.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in 1985, a movie called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/silverado\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Silverado<\/strong><\/a> happened, a big-budget revival of the traditional Western starring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/kevin_costner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Costner<\/a> (who would go on to do many more Westerns and win Oscars for doing so), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/kevin_kline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Kline<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/scott_glenn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scott Glenn<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/danny_glover\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Danny Glover<\/a>. It was directed and co-written by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/lawrence_kasdan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lawrence Kasdan<\/a>, known for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/raiders_of_the_lost_ark\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/big_chill\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Big Chill<\/a>, and contains much of the Kasdan sensibility found in those movies. HELL OR HIGH WATER.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Revisionist and Neo-Westerns: Grey Hats and Moral Ambiguity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/silverado\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Silverado<\/strong><\/a> and TV miniseries like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/tv\/lonesome_dove\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Lonesome Dove<\/strong><\/a> were love letters to the traditional Western, as the more cynical 1990s dawned, moral ambiguity became the rule in much of cinema, and Westerns were not immune. The neo-Western was born. Many countries have incredible landscapes, deserts, and prairies that make excellent American-frontier substitutes.<\/p>\n<p>Conflict between native peoples and settlers \/ colonists (depending on who you ask) is a recurring theme in many countries, especially places like Australia. No post-modern elements, no contemporary setting, just pure, old-fashioned cowboy goodness. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/tombstone\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Tombstone<\/strong> <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/dances_with_wolves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Dances with Wolves <\/strong><\/a>are all-time classics and show us that this approach can still work well.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, as today\u2019s filmmakers in some cases are moving away from deconstruction and post-modernism, \u201cCoca-Cola Classic\u201d Westerns are making a strong comeback.
