{"id":751177,"date":"2026-04-25T02:11:42","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T02:11:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/751177\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T02:11:42","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T02:11:42","slug":"updated-keller-fire-code-limits-scooter-storage-prohibits-ev-charging-stations-in-commercial-buildings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/751177\/","title":{"rendered":"Updated Keller fire code limits scooter storage, prohibits EV charging stations in commercial buildings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tKeller officials unanimously approved new updates to its fire code at a regular meeting April 21.<\/p>\n<p>The new code includes changes for emerging technology risks, fire protection requirements and new sections, which impact scooter storage and locations for electric vehicle charging stations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Micromobility devices like scooters, hoverboards and skateboards are now prohibited from being stored and charged in pathways or common areas of multi-family occupancies, schools and city buildings in Keller.<\/p>\n<p>A presentation Keller Fire Marshal Stephanie Billarreal provided to council showed 78% of lithium-ion battery fires occur indoors.<\/p>\n<p>Billarreal also said EV charging stations are now prohibited in commercial structures aside from parking garages. New code also requires that charging stations have a heat detector for chargers in multi-family buildings with garages.<\/p>\n<p>EV charging stations are now also required to have a remote power disconnect with signage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis gives firefighters the ability to shut off power completely without having to be right up on these vehicles,\u201d Billarreal said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The International Fire Code is a regional code recommended by the North Central Texas Council of Governnments, or NCTCOG, which adopts a new code every three years, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/cityofkeller.legistar.com\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=7983695&amp;GUID=95678CCA-A082-475C-A585-A8D313EDC677\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">city documents<\/a>. Keller officials approved the 2024 edition of the International Fire Code April 21.<\/p>\n<p>Additional amendments in the 2024 edition for Keller include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New and expanded requirements for lithium-ion batteries and energy storage systems<\/li>\n<li>Broader sprinkler and detection requirements<\/li>\n<li>Open burning related to agricultural and wildlife management allowed with a permit<\/li>\n<li>Recreational fires prohibited on balconies and patios of commercial and multi-family buildings, but allowed outdoors of 1-2 family dwellings 15 feet from a structure and following safety guidelines<\/li>\n<li>Valid fire inspection for mobile food vendors every year after new legislation taking effect July 1<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Keller officials unanimously approved new updates to its fire code at a regular meeting April 21.
