BOSTON \u2014<\/strong> \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\nAll Amtrak trains between Boston and New York City were canceled through early Saturday morning after a structural issue in Cranston, Rhode Island.<\/p>\n
Highway officials said a piece of the on-ramp to Interstate 95 detached and fell on railroad tracks below around 7:30 p.m. Friday. The debris included a large piece of the parapet, which is the metal barrier on the edge of the road.<\/p>\n
Amtrak crews and a contractor for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation have worked throughout the night to remove the debris from the railroad right-of-way, Amtrak said. <\/p>\n
Crews will then turn their efforts to repairing the tracks and the overhead catenary system that provides electric current to power the trains.<\/p>\n
“We expect to have the first of three tracks in the area returned to service by late morning on Saturday,” Amtrak said in a statement. “Trains operating through the area on this track will be pulled by diesel locomotives while repair work continues on the catenary system; customers should expect some delays as a result.<\/p>\n
“We anticipate a second track will return to service for electric train operations by mid-afternoon on Saturday. Currently, we expect the third track though the area to be returned to service by early morning on Sunday.”<\/p>\n
The following service adjustments are in effect for Saturday, April 25:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Northeast Regional Nos. 87 and 163 will operate as scheduled, but customers should expect delays as repair work continues in Rhode Island.<\/li>\n
- Acela Nos. 2248 and 2255 will operate as scheduled, but customers should expect delays as repair work continues in Rhode Island.<\/li>\n
- Northeast Regional No. 160 is canceled between New Haven, CT, and Boston. <\/li>\n
- Northeast Regional No. 135 is canceled between Boston and New Haven, CT, and will depart from New Haven.<\/li>\n
- Northeast Regional Nos. 99 and 195 are canceled between Boston and New York, and will depart from New York.<\/li>\n
- Acela Nos. 2249, 2252 and 2271 are canceled.<\/li>\n
- Northeast Regional Nos. 150, 161 and 162 are canceled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Rhode Island Department of Transportation officials said the on-ramp was due to be inspected six days after the incident. It is scheduled to be demolished and replaced.<\/p>\n
