The name of the gunman, who was sentenced to life imprisonment with no parole, isn’t mentioned.

Following the tragedy at Port Arthur, Mr Mikac set up an organisation in the name of his daughters to advocate for the safety of children and campaign against violence.

He said the mission of the Alannah & Madeline Foundation had given him strength to continue pushing the reforms he called for in his letter to John Howard back in 1996.

Thirty years on, Mr Mikac believes Australia is a much safer place thanks to the National Firearms Agreement.

But as he prepares to mark Tuesday’s grim anniversary, he said nothing should be taken for granted.

“I think the number one message is to treasure every minute you’ve got with your family because it’s not a given.

“And in the more general sense, let’s not get complacent about our gun laws.”

The Port Arthur Historic Site.
