{"id":75322,"date":"2025-07-19T12:13:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T12:13:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/75322\/"},"modified":"2025-07-19T12:13:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T12:13:11","slug":"nyc-airports-face-steep-increase-in-flight-cancellations-this-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/75322\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC airports face steep increase in flight cancellations this summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These airports are definitely not ready for takeoff.<\/p>\n<p>Travelers are faced with a spike in flight cancellations this summer, compared to last year \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/20\/lifestyle\/10-worst-us-airports-for-flight-delays-revealed-no-surprise-nyc-hubs-made-the-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYC\u2019s already unpopular airports<\/a> are some of the worst offenders, new data showed.<\/p>\n<p>Flight tracker\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightaware.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FlightAware<\/a> crunched the numbers \u2014\u00a0and found that the cancellation rate is up about 29%, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/flight-cancellations-surging-summer-airports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS News reported. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Airports have reported a spike in flight cancellations compared to last year.  REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Between the week of Memorial Day and mid-July, the return-to-gate rate jumped from 1.4% in 2024 to 1.8% this year.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s despite nearly 256,000 fewer \u2014 about 18% \u2014 flights having been scheduled for this year\u2019s peak season, compared to last.<\/p>\n<p>And of all the airports in the country, the less-than-holy trinity Big Apple flyers are forced to contend with are being called out as some of worst offenders.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/22\/lifestyle\/nyc-airport-named-best-in-the-us-new-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">much-ballyhooed \u201cnew\u201d LaGuardia Airport<\/a> was the 5th worst, and perennially unpleasant John F. Kennedy International Airport was the 9th \u2014\u00a0while <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/23\/lifestyle\/pilot-disastrous-truth-about-flying-out-of-newark-airport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">personnel-issue-plagued Newark Liberty International Airport<\/a> came close behind at number 10.<\/p>\n<p>New York City airports have some of the worst cancellation rates in the country. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>LaGuardia Airport has canceled about 5% of flights so far this summer \u2014 a 65% increase from last year. <\/p>\n<p>This has sunk its on-time performance rate down 6.1%. <\/p>\n<p>JFK Airport has canceled about 3% of flights this season \u2014 a 42% increase from 2024. <\/p>\n<p>And over in New Jersey, Newark has cancelled about 3% of flights taking off this summer \u2014 a 28% jump from last year. <\/p>\n<p>The top three offenders were further south: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington D.C., Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>However, not all the airports in the country are scrambling. <\/p>\n<p>Some have actually decreased their cancellation rates compared to this time last summer. <\/p>\n<p>Between the week of Memorial Day and mid-July, the cancellation rate jumped from 1.4% in 2024 to 1.8% this year. AP<\/p>\n<p>Miami International Airport\u2019s cancellation rate has dropped 40% with on-time performance up 7.3%. <\/p>\n<p>Just up the road, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport has reported a cancellation rate that is 25% lower than last year, with on-time performance up 5.6%.<\/p>\n<p>And if your flight isn\u2019t cancelled, but you have to drop out of the trip for another reason, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/15\/lifestyle\/travelers-are-buying-strangers-canceled-vacations-to-travel-for-cheap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you can just sell it to another lucky traveler.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Nonrefundable vacations\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/15\/lifestyle\/airbnb-makes-changes-to-its-cancellation-policy-to-benefit-guests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can leave thwarted trippers<\/a> thousands out of pocket \u2014 and some are turning to increasingly popular online marketplaces to find someone to fill their seat.<\/p>\n<p>These sites allow sellers to post\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/15\/lifestyle\/passengers-delayed-for-7-hours-after-two-unruly-men-attempt-to-storm-cockpit-despite-pleas-from-crew\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nonrefundable flights<\/a>, room bookings or packages they can no longer use, and eager buyers can scoop them up \u2014 often at dramatic discounts, typically between 20% and 30% off the original price.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"These airports are definitely not ready for takeoff.
