His spare aesthetic was achieved with Douglas fir planks and wall-size windows that reflect the outdoors. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CTDXQRBR5VFW3P6G4UPUDE3H2U\">After six decades of ownership, the Zaik family is selling their home at <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/PWWdWT3R91c1XRRK8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/PWWdWT3R91c1XRRK8\">720 N.W. Saint Helens Ave.<\/a> for the first time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MJCM2PCTZZC6VGHWOJRTMXRUYE\">The asking price is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/OR\/Portland\/720-NW-Saint-Helens-Ave-97229\/home\/26438737\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/OR\/Portland\/720-NW-Saint-Helens-Ave-97229\/home\/26438737\">$1,599,000<\/a> and an open house is scheduled for 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SJZ622XZ2ZEGLCLBWOK6CVMMTU\">The property would appeal to \u201csomeone seeking the Northwest Regional Modern lifestyle,\u201d listing broker <a href=\"https:\/\/portlandmodern.com\/agent\/lance-marrs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/portlandmodern.com\/agent\/lance-marrs\">Lance Marrs<\/a> of Portland Modern Real Estate told The Oregonian\/OregonLive. \u201cThis is architectural zen in a private forest location 10 minutes from downtown. It\u2019s a modern and timeless oasis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NYKO2RXZQJBW5ED7OI3VBXEZK4\">Zaik\u2019s original vision was to live among the mature fir and maple trees. The well-preserved home has 2,009 square feet of space divided into two pavilions separated by a glass lobby and accessed by a cantilevered entry deck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"44FZOCZ44BHGDHZ3WB24VTXHBI\">The main wing has walls of glass on two levels for forested views in the living, dining and kitchen spaces, and the lower level\u2019s two bedrooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"I2DDTOS2ERAFTHJPA6CLNI6O4Q\">The other wing has two bedrooms and a bathroom with glass doors that open to a garden carved into the hillside. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LIB2EAA2E5HAJEFQJT3JF5H5XA\">White wall panels balance the large amount of wood planks on the ceilings and floors. Interior partial-height walls add to the sense of airiness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QTIXDIPBORBKFKOIN3XBZYQND4\">Surrounding the two wings are decks for entertaining under the stars. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OB7S23PGDZHVJBJJISW5E5FPMM\">Marrs likens the feel of Zaik\u2019s residence to a treehouse. \u201cDappled sunlight, filtering through the forest canopy, fills the house from every side,\u201d Marrs said in the listing description. <\/p>\n<p>Saul Zaik\u2019s work<img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"lv.saul\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"hero-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/B6C6JKF72RCW3KFMU6ZY3P27YE.jpg\" \/>Architect Saul Zaik designed highly livable modern homes. The innovative architect and preservation supporter, who <a href=\"https:\/\/obits.oregonlive.com\/obituaries\/oregon\/obituary.aspx?n=saul-e-zaik&amp;pid=195152181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">died in 2020<\/a> at age 93, left a legacy of handsome houses that exhibit all the appealing traits of Northwest modernism and its strong connection to the outdoors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WIHS7MXJ7JAOZP2QBD3UT3X5EE\">The style, introduced in the 1930s by Portland\u2019s star architects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/hg\/2017\/05\/john_yeon_watzek_portland_art.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Yeon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/hg\/2019\/08\/celebrating-architect-pietro-belluschis-120-anniversary-building-tours-book-talk-and-dinner-in-his-home.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pietro Belluschi<\/a>, and later championed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hereisoregon.com\/places\/2024\/06\/4-portland-couples-pooled-their-resources-to-build-lookalike-midcentury-homes-see-how-rooms-look-now.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.hereisoregon.com\/places\/2024\/06\/4-portland-couples-pooled-their-resources-to-build-lookalike-midcentury-homes-see-how-rooms-look-now.html\">John Storrs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/hg\/index.ssf\/2016\/09\/van_evera_bailey_portland_phot.html#incart_river_index\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Van Evera Bailey<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/hg\/2019\/12\/historic-southeast-portland-gem-of-a-house-sparkles-with-holiday-decorations.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Herman Brookman<\/a> and Zaik, remains popular due to the high level of livability and connection to nature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NG5XQAWGOZATNP6RL6FD2D75EY\">Zaik\u2019s easily identifiable, site-oriented work can be seen in resorts, condominiums in Salishan and other scenic places, as well as residences, like the <a href=\"http:\/\/pcad.lib.washington.edu\/building\/21923\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1956 Feldman House<\/a> for the heir to the Mt. Hood Borax Co.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JTTUQ2GSHFEHDB46RLQ4BJBZDI\">Zaik, who served in World War II as a U.S. Navy radio operator <a href=\"https:\/\/chatterbox.typepad.com\/portlandarchitecture\/2020\/01\/remembering-saul-zaik-last-of-the-midcentury-modern-greats.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/chatterbox.typepad.com\/portlandarchitecture\/2020\/01\/remembering-saul-zaik-last-of-the-midcentury-modern-greats.html\">aboard a transport ship in the Pacific<\/a>, is famous for designing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/living\/2023\/05\/see-inside-this-saul-zaik-designed-house-that-sits-on-a-ships-mast-in-sw-portland.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/living\/2023\/05\/see-inside-this-saul-zaik-designed-house-that-sits-on-a-ships-mast-in-sw-portland.html\">1970 Zidell House<\/a> on a steep, wooded parcel in Portland\u2019s Southwest Hills. The octagonal dwelling with a ship\u2019s mast was commissioned by shipyard magnate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ojmche.org\/oral-history-people\/saul-zaik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arnold Zidell<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YH3JR5N63NG6ZLTRBL4QC267LE\">Zaik imagined the house as if it were an open umbrella. At the center is the mast of the decommissioned naval ship, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_James_O%27Hara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USS James O\u2019Hara<\/a>, that rises 48 feet before poking through the foundation of the house and continuing another 30 feet to the roof. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E3LIKPTCVBBCJDM43LJILIKS5U\">Zaik\u2019s work appeared in Dwell, Sunset and architecture magazines, and Portland architectural writer Brian Libby<b> <\/b>called Zaik the <a href=\"https:\/\/chatterbox.typepad.com\/portlandarchitecture\/2020\/01\/remembering-saul-zaik-last-of-the-midcentury-modern-greats.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/chatterbox.typepad.com\/portlandarchitecture\/2020\/01\/remembering-saul-zaik-last-of-the-midcentury-modern-greats.html\">\u201clast of the midcentury-modern greats.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JZ2LOONUXRENTM3COAQM2TEF2M\">In 1956, the University of Oregon graduate shared a <a href=\"https:\/\/chatterbox.typepad.com\/portlandarchitecture\/2020\/01\/remembering-saul-zaik-last-of-the-midcentury-modern-greats.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">downtown Portland studio<\/a> at Southwest 14th Avenue and Columbia Street with architects Donald Blair, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/realestate\/2022\/04\/midcentury-modern-architect-william-fletchers-first-portland-house-is-for-sale-for-the-first-time.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Fletcher<\/a> and other members of the fabled \u201c14th Street Gang\u201d of outliers designing intentionally pared-down buildings in the Pacific Northwest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MBAJMNIIKJGHFK6WDZRSLK5OYM\">Zaik later partnered with Blair as Blair &amp; Zaik Architects. Then Zaik\/Miller Associates was established in 1966 by Zaik and Jim Miller.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FCE3YEEUVVB4JGYTRUJ2FGOMPM\">The firm designed commercial buildings and contributed to additions and restoration of landmarks such as the Historic Timberline Lodge, in partnership with the late A.P. \u201cBenny\u201d DiBenedetto\u2019s firm, as well as the Crater Lake Lodge campus and Vista House at Crown Point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S6S4OVOU4VH2XHPONVCLV6FIEM\">Zaik Associates received national and local design awards from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Institute of Architects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QLX3Q7J6FVEAVFFO4R7632BQQY\">\u2014 Janet Eastman covers design and trends.
