(Naturally, all of our screen names usually contained the name of the person we were \u201cdating\u201d at the time \u2015 NicksGirl4Eva88 was the height of romance in middle school in 2001.)<\/p>\n<p>When I got my own phone not long after, I downloaded my favorite songs to use as ringtones, just like every other teenager I knew. I was as eager as ever to receive texts. (Phone calls? Those not so much. But the way Gen Z sees it, it\u2019s their phone, their time and their prerogative if they need to set boundaries. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I\u2019m trying to study for an upcoming exam, a new Snapchat notification or Instagram message can often send me into a downward spiral of scrolling through my social media accounts for several minutes,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@madzzz1212\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Madeline Kerestman\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"687922eae4b0b08368f53b6a\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@madzzz1212\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"13\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Madeline Kerestman<\/a>, a 21-year-old pre-med student and social media influencer who goes on DND for chunks of the day.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re busy working, a random alert hinders your progress more than you realize. A <a href=\"https:\/\/ics.uci.edu\/~gmark\/CHI2005.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"2005 study\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"687922eae4b0b08368f53b6a\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/ics.uci.edu\/~gmark\/CHI2005.pdf\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"14\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2005 study<\/a> out of the University of California at Irvine found that, on average, it takes around 23 minutes for most workers to get back on task after an interruption.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just her study flow state that Kerestman is trying to protect when she goes incommunicado, though. Like many on TikTok, Kerestman said using the feature is about \u201cprotecting her peace.\u201d More and more, she\u2019s trying to live in the moment rather than living for the <a href=\"https:\/\/sitn.hms.harvard.edu\/flash\/2018\/dopamine-smartphones-battle-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"dopamine rush of a new \u201clike\u201d\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"687922eae4b0b08368f53b6a\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/sitn.hms.harvard.edu\/flash\/2018\/dopamine-smartphones-battle-time\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"15\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dopamine rush of a new \u201clike\u201d<\/a> or comment. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI constantly receive notifications from both TikTok and Instagram that notify me of new likes, comments, and followers,\u201d she said. \u201cWhile I love this aspect of having a platform and being connected to others, it can really be stressful and distracting sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s just a bonus that going on DND means dodging all the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/how-to-stop-spam-text-messages_l_62f4fddae4b0288b61a22e11\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"spam calls and texts \" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"687922eae4b0b08368f53b6a\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"62f4fddae4b0288b61a22e11\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"16\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">spam calls and texts <\/a>the rest of us are getting hit by lately.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-sized__img landscape\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" alt=\"On TikTok, Gen Z'ers vouch for how much more peaceful their lives are now that they've enabled the DND setting on their phone.\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/65dd04ea2300001d00655fd4.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>@madzzz1212\/@lamontlaflare\/@meghancurrrie<\/p>\n<p>On TikTok, Gen Z&#8217;ers vouch for how much more peaceful their lives are now that they&#8217;ve enabled the DND setting on their phone.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s pretty simple to go on DND. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifewire.com\/turn-off-do-not-disturb-android-5397903\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"For Android users,\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"687922eae4b0b08368f53b6a\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.lifewire.com\/turn-off-do-not-disturb-android-5397903\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"17\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">For Android users,<\/a> swipe down from the Home screen to access the Notification Center, then swipe once more to expand the whole panel. Tap Do Not Disturb to toggle it on.<\/p>\n<p>If you have an iPhone, go to Settings &gt; Focus &gt; Do Not Disturb. In the last few years, some teens have gotten rid of their smartphones in favor of flip phones. It made me observe myself as a person. I\u2019ve been trying to write a book, too. Instagram, BeReal and TikTok don\u2019t always need your attention. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could see Gen Z using DND as a tool to set boundaries,\u201d she said. \u201cIt helps create a sense of control over relationships that aren\u2019t serving them, either by being less accessible or having less access themselves to what others are doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For those with attention-deficit\/hyperactivity disorder, the DND function and carving out one designated time a day to respond can be a real game-changer. (They\u2019re too old to be considered Gen Zers and too young to be millennials.)<\/p>\n<p>Personally, she loves the DND feature. She always just assumes if someone really needs to get in touch with her, they\u2019ll call her back or she\u2019ll get to them when she gets to them.
