He realized he\u2019d gained a significant amount of weight since playing high school sports, but didn&#8217;t realize how much until he stepped on a scale\u2014and it couldn&#8217;t read his weight. At first, he didn\u2019t know where to start, but he soon connected with a personal trainer who helped him via online coaching. TJ ended up losing 200 pounds and gained a lifelong friend in his trainer. Today, he maintains the healthy habits he learned in the process. Here&#8217;s how he did it, in his own words.<br data-node-id=\"0.1\"\/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"body-dropcap css-f8e2h7 emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"1.0\">AROUND THE HOLIDAY<\/strong> season in 2018, something prompted me to weigh myself. It had been a while. I hopped on a scale in my apartment, which was rated to 350 pounds, and it read \u201cerror.\u201d <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">That made me more curious about my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/weight-loss\/g19543131\/seven-fitness-weight-loss-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/weight-loss\/g19543131\/seven-fitness-weight-loss-apps\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"weight\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">weight<\/a>. So I bought another scale that was rated for 450 to 500 pounds. When I stepped on that scale, I saw that I was at 410 pounds. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">My heart sank. I\u2019ve always been a bigger guy, but I\u2019d never seen a 4 as the first digit of my weight. I still felt the same as when I played high school sports, and I was a big kid, weighing 290 during my freshman year. I assumed I was still around the same size. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">So, I started researching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a64607714\/do-weight-loss-gummies-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a64607714\/do-weight-loss-gummies-work\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"weight loss\" data-node-id=\"5.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">weight loss<\/a> online. I started looking up crazy stuff like how to lose 100 pounds in 90 days, and trying to find any secret. I tried reducing the amount I ate, but I didn\u2019t notice any change in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/weight-loss\/a46790047\/stages-of-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/weight-loss\/a46790047\/stages-of-weight-loss\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"weight\" data-node-id=\"5.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">weight<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Then, I saw a newspaper article about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/coachmichael\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/coachmichael\/?hl=en\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Michael Soares\" data-node-id=\"6.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Soares<\/a>, who was starting the fitness platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joinnewhuman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.joinnewhuman.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"New Human\" data-node-id=\"6.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">New Human<\/a>. He\u2019s also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonseaport.xyz\/seaport-sweat\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bostonseaport.xyz\/seaport-sweat\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Seaport Sweat\" data-node-id=\"6.5\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Seaport Sweat<\/a> fitness instructor in Boston and from a town near where I\u2019m from, too. I emailed Mike about my weight loss goals, and he sent me some workouts to try. I started doing them, and they killed me, but I felt better. Then, we started working together through his online coaching platform. It just clicked for me. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">After 18 months, I lost 200 pounds. And, Mike and I became friends\u2014we were groomsmen in each other\u2019s weddings. Here are four ways his approach helped me lose weight: <\/p>\n<p>I Never Felt Tied Down.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"9.0\">MIKE\u2019S APPROACH WORKED<\/strong> for me because it was never about elimination. I didn\u2019t have to give up cake or pizza. The approach helped me learn that all that stuff is fine in moderation. But you have to eat things that make you feel good. When I did, I felt better, moved better, thought more clearly, and performed better at work. But, rather than focusing on hitting the gym seven days a week, Mike taught me to find other ways to feel good. Maybe I\u2019d go walk around the grocery store or find a new recipe to make. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Then, the next day, I\u2019d pick back up at the gym. I didn\u2019t feel like any part of my life was ever really tied down. <\/p>\n<p>I Overcame Anxiety.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"14.0\">WHEN I STARTED<\/strong> my fitness journey, I had a lot of anxiety. When there were a lot of people at the gym, a few times, I got stressed out and left. I just always hated the feeling of being the biggest guy.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Going to a group fitness class scared me even more. I always felt like people were looking at me. At Mike\u2019s classes, sometimes I was surrounded by 100 people, and I knew I wasn\u2019t the fastest or strongest. But he pushed me to show up, and I started coming around. I started feeling a sense of community.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Over time, it really brought fitness full circle from being intimidated to even step into a gym to getting my footing, to being comfortable with being in a gym, and then to being comfortable working out around with upwards of 500 people in a given space. <\/p>\n<p>I Still Work Out.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"18.0\">NOW, I TRY<\/strong> to work out between three and five times a week, depending on my schedule. The biggest thing that sustains me is remaining surrounded by the fitness community.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">I ended up managing a gym. I also got certified as a trainer, and I\u2019ve trained about 15 people. I check boxes for things like drinking a cold glass of water in the morning, going to the gym, sleeping well, and getting outside for some sunshine and fresh air. <\/p>\n<p>I Just Got Started.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"24.0\">FOR ANYBODY WHO\u2019S <\/strong>struggling to lose weight, it really is as simple as just starting. Google three bodyweight exercises to do at home; reach out to a trainer. Just hold yourself accountable. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Do it for yourself, but keep in mind that it&#8217;s not just you. It takes a village to get it done. If I\u2019d gone into my fitness journey by myself, based on what my online searches showed, I probably would still be treading water, rather than going out seeking the accountability buddy in Mike and other people in my life. Thankfully, my wife and my parents were very supportive. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Really, it&#8217;s just finding someone to help you share that accountability.
