But a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mingchikuo\/status\/2048587389791269182?s=61&amp;t=a-bloX1n-TZ50ofqhetO1A\" rel=\"nofollow\">new report<\/a> says that\u2019s no longer the case, and an iPhone competitor from OpenAI is now in the works.<\/p>\n<p>Ming-Chi Kuo says OpenAI planning 2028 launch for its first phone<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/ChatGPT-for-iOS-updated.jpg\" alt=\"ChatGPT for iOS updated | iPhone with OpenAI logo\" class=\"wp-image-889413\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve followed OpenAI hardware rumors, you\u2019ll know that the company is working with former Apple design chief Jony Ive on a suite of AI-infused hardware devices.<\/p>\n<p>The first product <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2026\/02\/20\/openais-first-jony-ive-device-sounds-like-homepod-2-0-report\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expected to launch<\/a> is a new HomePod-type smart speaker infused with ChatGPT and built-in camera. Smart glasses and a smart lamp are also reportedly in development.<\/p>\n<p>While previous reporting has consistently said that OpenAI is not working on a phone, it seems that\u2019s no longer the case.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mingchikuo\/status\/2048587389791269182?s=61&amp;t=a-bloX1n-TZ50ofqhetO1A\" rel=\"nofollow\">in a post on X<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>OpenAI is working with MediaTek and Qualcomm to develop smartphone processors, with Luxshare as the exclusive system co-design and manufacturing partner. Mass production is expected in 2028\u2026Specifications and suppliers are expected to be finalized by late 2026 or 1Q27.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Kuo also explains his belief that AI agents will shape the OpenAI smartphone, making it work and feel very different from an iPhone.<\/p>\n<p>In what\u2019s probably no coincidence, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sama\/status\/2048428561481265539?s=61&amp;t=a-bloX1n-TZ50ofqhetO1A\" rel=\"nofollow\">posted the following on X yesterday<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">feels like a good time to seriously rethink how operating systems and user interfaces are designed<\/p>\n<p>(also the internet; there should be a protocol that is equally usable by people and agents)<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sam Altman (@sama) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sama\/status\/2048428561481265539?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 26, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While OpenAI clearly believed at one point that it could disrupt the iPhone with its first AI devices, perhaps it now sees the smartphone as central to AI uses for many years to come.<\/p>\n<p>That sounds a lot like the belief of Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas, who <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2026\/04\/23\/the-iphone-is-not-getting-disrupted-at-all-by-ai-says-perplexity-ceo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said last week<\/a> that \u201cthe iPhone is actually not getting disrupted by AI at all.\u201d He instead argued that as AI improves, the iPhone becomes even more valuable to users.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think of OpenAI creating its own phone?
